New phone line with later change of number

[link to this post]

I have recently gone back to BT (18th August) and all seem OK at the moment.

However I have asked BT to port my existing Virgin Media phone number back to BT.

After several requests I have now had clarification and I have been told that it will be ported back on the 16th September. This date appears to be about the date my contract with VM will end. I am disappointed with the delay but it is something that I will have to accept.

When a new BT line is set up broadband cannot be ordered for about five days due to the time lag before BT checker will recognise the line.

My first question is this - will I have to wait another 5 or six days, after the new number has been ported back to BT, before ordering my new adsl broadband?

As it is now six days since the line was installed I can use the checker to check the probable (possible!) speed of connection.

Will these stats have any relevance if I am going over to LLU?

BT line checker states:

BT Wholesale
THE ADSL BROADBAND AVAILABILITY CHECKER

For Telephone Number xxxx xxxxxx on Exchange ST NEOTS

Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a line rate up to 2Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a potential ADSL Max broadband line rate of 4.5Mbps or greater.

Your exchange is planned to have ADSL WBC by 31st March 2009. Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a potential ADSL WBC broadband line rate of 6Mbps up to 8Mbps.

The actual ADSL line rate supportable will be determined during the first 10 days of use, after which time the highest stable rate possible will be set.

If you decide to place an order, a further test will be performed to confirm if your line is suitable for the service you wish to purchase.

Thank you for your interest.

Now with Virgin Media cable (2MB) previously with the excellent ZEN but had line problems.

Could you clarify how many BT lines you have, is it one or two? i.e. did you order a BT line, get it, and now want to assign your Virgin Cable phone number to that line?

BT's database can take several days to be updated after changes.

Some LLU operators make use of BT's database before accepting orders, some don't (I think).

Sorry for the confusion.

I have made it even more confusing by adding a bit to the end about the BT checker.

I have just one BT line which has been assigned a new number and I am now awaiting the old number to be ported over from VM.

Now with Virgin Media cable (2MB) probably going over to Sky LLU.

At the St Neots exchange the only decent LLU operator is Sky. The others tend only to be suitable for light broadband users (fine if you fall into that category), or those who believe bundles of telephone and broadband save money.

If you have or want Sky TV then Sky broadband is good. UKOnline use the same LLU kit as Sky and are decent if you don't want Sky TV.
