Taking UKonline email to BT Broadband, with outloo

[link to this post]

My work has just changes from UKonline to Bt as broadband providers, they - in their ignorance - have been using a ukonilne email as their work email on cards etc although have own domain.

The problem is they use outlook for email and BT are now saying their ISP will not send UKONLINE emails (they have kept a mailbox), habe spoken to the and say not possible, have spoken to ukonlione and they are stumped why BT cannot and have tried chanign SMTP detail as per instructions for normal emails which are working normally.

Does anyone have any ideas, please.

Thanks

I'm a bit confused by what you say there. I though BT were the ISP now?

Anyway, are they able to read UKOnline emails OK? I expect so.

In which case it looks as though BT are blocking Port 25 for outgoing SMTP to external (non-BT) SMTP servers. This is quite common. It's supposed to stop spam relays.

Ask UKOnline if their SMTP server listens on any other port as well as port 25. That's what email hosters do. If they do then it is just a matter of changing the port number in the Outlook account(s).

A less good option is to send using the BT SMTP server but put the UKOnline email address in the User Information email address and Return Address fields in the Outlook account(s).

Who is the domain hosted with. It may be better to sign up to their email service if they do listen on alternative ports.

thanks for the reply,

yes BT are hosting the ISP but the email we are having problems with is a UKONLINE email and BT say they cannot change their ISP to allow the ukonline email to send so the only way to send an email is using we mail which i think is rubbish but can't work out how to get around this,

using the BT smtp doesn't work.

will try looking at the port options tomorrow.

Thanks

Make sure you look carefully at my suggestion for using the General Info fields in the Outlook accounts.

Another possibility is to use a proper email host such as Purple Cloud. You would be able to send through their SMTP server using your BT connection and fill in the fields I said, so it lookes to the receiver as though it is from the UKOnline address.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think your terminology is a bit mixed up. An ISP is an Internet Service Provider. UKOnline are one, BT Retail is one. At the basic level all an ISP does is provide a connection to the internet.

An ISP can provide an email hosting service. Most but not all do.

You say "yes BT are hosting the ISP". Not so. BT do not host ISPs. I think they are saying they cannot change their email system and that they cannot allow port 25 access to other email systems such as UKOnline's.

The suggestions I have made will normally get round this. I'm not sure via BT though. I have asked BT users if they can help.

BT like a lot of other massive providers has harsh SMTP rules,

http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/showthreaded.php?Bo... is a way of setting the FROM field even though you will use the BT servers and I think is what the poster is asking.

Some providers have their SMTP servers available on non-standard ports and with security enabled for this situation, so worth checking whether UK Online have any access to their servers from outside.

NOTE: If they are not a UK Online customer anymore then at somepoint the UK Online POP3/SMTP accounts may just be deleted.

NOTE2: If they have a domain, then best to start using it now, before things get even more complex, and start to inform customers of this.

I think that Mr S is probably right there.

I have my own domain with email forwarded to the btinternet.com addresses, and when BT introduced the authentication process described there, I had to register all my domain's accounts with BTYahoo before the emails would send.
