Speed testing by specific IP

[link to this post]

Hi guys,

Is there a speed monitoring tool which can be used to provide stats on download/upload speeds to a specific IP ? Something that can be left running over some time and occasionally checked to see lets say average d/u speed.

Cheers

To actually run the tests you need to be using the connection, we have our tbbmeter that will monitor your speeds for you as you use a connection is that what you want?

Thank you for your reply, the situation is that I need to estimate an average speed from one of our servers to specific remote one. Basically our server talks to many remote machines over the internet but I would require to know speed to/from only one.
I googled for possible candidates but there are a lot of bandwidth emters, general speed tester, ....

You are looking at what could be a very variable number there, as even the speed between the remote machine and the ISP it is connected to can vary from whatever it's maximum is, (which depends on the individual line between the machine and the exchange), down to a few hundred kbps, depending on the quality of the ISP.

Have you made sure that that speed is reasonably consistent before you start trying to measure speeds from your server, to its ISP, through multiple changeable routes on the net, to the remote exchange and machine?

There is a program that can automatically perform speed tests at regular intervals between the remote machine and its ISP.

Which ISPs are involved here? And what exchange is the remote machine using? That info could give an immediate clue to the causes of whatever problem you are trying to trace. What is the problem anyway?

Estimating an average speed where you are actually sending traffic to calculate this will actually affect things, would it not be better to look at the speeds people see as they use the service.

A hosting firm should be able to provide details of speeds and loads on the links, but that depends on the type of service you've bought.

What you appear to need is custom software that will transfer some data periodically between two servers which you effectively own, tbbmeter is not setup for that. Firms like Epitiro can do this on a commercial basis, and the software at http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/general/t/3598680-j... if you place some files on each server and set it up to use those files would do the job.

NOTE: The app itself is a GUI application, and thus may not work well on a server based configuration.

At it's simplest, transferring a fixed size file back and fore at regular intervals and measuring each transfer time would seem to suffice. Probably, a simple script could be made to initiate transfers, count and time each transfer, compute the averages, convert to whatever transfer rate is required and even parse the result to wherever it needs to go.

It's not that simple though is it.... wink
