Virgin line saga!

[link to this post]

Ok, so last month virgin migrated my connection to ADSL2+ LLU and promptly broke the line, queue 3 weeks off line before they swapped hardware in the exchange and we got back online. Up till this point we had had 5 years of stable (all be it slow at times, service)

After we got back online were have had random disconnects etc and virgin are trying to blame our wiring in spite of the fact we never had trouble until they did the LLU switch. The line seems to have stabilised a bit after many phone calls. Download speeds are now pretty poor, less than half of the line sync at best and needing a reboot at worst and to be honest I am sick of dealing with virgin! Here are the stats for the line:-
Downstream
Noise Margin: 6.4 dB
Connection Rate: 6144 Kbps
Line Attenuation: 45.0 dB
Power: 19.8 dBm
Max Rate: 6912 Kbps

SF: 365504
SF Errors: 25
Reed Solomon: 24854302
RS Corrected: 20198
RS Un-Corrected: 209
HEC: 20
Errored Seconds: 34
Severe ES: 1
Interleave Depth: 32

Upstream
Noise Margin: 7.0 dB
Connection Rate: 928 Kbps
Line Attenuation: 23.0 dB
Power: 12.5 dBm
Max Rate: 1104 Kbps

SF: 379967
SF Errors: 24
Reed Solomon: 6459439
RS Corrected: 2
RS Un-Corrected: 0
HEC: 12
Errored Seconds: 0
Severe ES: 0
Interleave Depth: 1

These seem pretty stable...
We are fairly heavy users and the speed is an issue, the trouble is we don't want to pay much over £20 a month and it might be hard to sell that to swmbo as we only pay £10 atm. Is there anything else to ask virgin to try? or do I just migrate? but to who? We are on the Bognor Regis Exchange, so there is some choice of supplier, the trouble is I am about 2.5Km from the exchange so I am about at the line limits, but I would like a reliable service!

Many thanks
Scott

That doesn't look like ADSL2 to me. More like ADSL.

Anyway, your internal wiring is a very likely cause of noise so have a read here: http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/connectionprobs.htm

That's a pretty standard response to line stability issues.

I beg to differ ....

Upstream
Noise Margin: 7.0 dB
Connection Rate: 928 Kbps
Line Attenuation: 23.0 dB
Power: 12.5 dBm
Max Rate: 1104 Kbps

looks like a 2+ upstream to me. Mind you, I'd agree that ruling out any, and all extension wiring is always worth a go.

According to virgin it is adsl 2+ LLU. I have tried most of the tests listed, we have a bt fitted fitted filtered master socket, so have no test port, the really annoying thing is it all worked fine until they fiddled with it....

Yes you do, undo the two screws on the front, and gently slide towrds you, the test jack will be exposed behind. *In theory* the stats should be the same with or without the SSFP.
That is a poor downstream sync for a 2+ line at that attenuation.

Might try that, not sure it will make much difference as it is an adsl NTE5 Faceplate which is, in theory at least, better than the dongle filter I will have to use if I take the faceplate off..

Yes, thats what I said, but its worth a go.
You can see up to 8 meg on lines with the same attenuation as yours, with vanilla Max. SO 'something' is providing the duff downstream sync.

ok, plugged into the test socket now, everything seems the same tbh, but will leave it on this overnight. I'm fairly sure it is something virgin has done, lol....

Speed test results here: http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results/id/1...

As you can see actual transfer is even worse.
