What download speeds can I expect?

[link to this post]

I am currently with Orange and have been since the Freeserve days. I'm paying something like £18.50 a month, which is way more than they are charging now. I'm not sure which package I'm on, but I get speeds of 300kb/s when downloading files etc. It's not enough to watch youtube videos without pausing nevermind Iplayer or online games without lag. My upload speed is 60kb/s.

These are the stats from the router:

Connection mode : ADSL2+ (definately not. My exchange does not get ADSL2+ until 2010)
Type : Fast
Noise margin (dB) : 9.7
Attenuation (dB) : 61.5
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 2911

Downstream Upstream
Rate (kbps) 2894 605

The exchange is 3.12km (direct) away, so i assume the line will be much further.

What download speeds can I expect if I switch to BT, Be etc?

Thanks

looks like you're on Orange LLU.

2894k at 61.5 dB is about as much as you can expect from anyone.
300 kbytes/s or 2400 kbits/s of download seems fair enough for the line speed too.
I doubt you'll do any better elsewhere.

Phil

MaxDSL - goes as fast as it can and doesn't read the line checker first.

Are your kids pirates ? Limewire, Bearshare, Kazaa, BitTorrent, eMule are all tools of the trade.

Unless the figures are getting confused along the way (see yarwell's reply) I can't see why you are having problems with YouTube and iPlayer.

If you are getting 2400 kbits/s download then things should work fine???

It might be worth preforming a speed test and linking to the results...

I have been using speedtest.net. Link

I have been getting this speed for years, and have only just decided to do something about it.

With an attenuation of 61.5db that's a decent speed and there's not a lot you can do about it.

I'm surprised you have trouble streaming video with that result though.

I do, it's ridiculous. For a 5 minute video on youtube, I have to pause it for around a minute usually. I gave up on the BBC Iplayer.

Are you getting loads of errors?
Might be worth posting your router stats and error counts.
