Two Connections or other redundancy strategies

[link to this post]

I have Virgin Cable 20Meg which is usually up to speed. Recently, though I had 5 days without service and that has set me thinking about getting a second connection. Can one even have two internet connections on one home network? Alternatively I could get a mobile broadband to use as backup. What would others be prepared to pay for a service they wouldn't use very often?

You are looking at a device like this if you want it slick.

http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?...

You can get ADSL2+ routers with USB socket for 3G Modem.

It's a shame that product does not do the secondary 3G connection, as cable could be primary and a 3G dongle could be your backup.

http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?...

The 2820n has secondary WAN/3G plus ADSL. (but you can't seem to use 3G and Secondary WAN, has to one or the other).

So might be better to get that, plus having your cable on the secondary WAN port set to the primary connection and a basic ADSL line, as the failover.

Thank you for the suggestions, dual WAN sounds sexy but I don't have a BT line at present so I guess I would need to get a BT line installed?

I think you'd need to go down the Cable + ADSL route.. as you can't use secondary WAN + 3G together (we've got that unit here and I just tested to make sure).

You'd need a phone line, BT can supply this or you could go with a complete LLU solution like Sky, or Talk Talk where you pay your broadband and phone rental to the same company.

Actually.. the 2910 series has WAN/2ND WAN and 3G backup which would do perfectly.

http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/vigor2910.html

You'd not need ADSL for that, and you can pick up a 3G dongle on per day (£2) basis such as the one from T-Mobile. So if you don't use it, you don't pay.

The T-mobile think looks interesting, I will check out the small print.

Thanks, David

As a business broadband user (one who works from home), I take it very seriously. Hence three BB connections (see sig). The Zen one has been playing up for 3 weeks, and still is.

I have no worries about exceeding my 3G allowance - Orange Business Broadband Anywhere doesn't have one (only fair usage).

T Mobile state (for the Mobile Broadband Plus Daily plan):

This plan comes with a fair use policy of 3GB a month. If you use more than your fair use policy amount, we won't charge you any more, but we may restrict how you can use your plan, depending on how often you go over your amount and by how much.
