Slow page loading on a so called faster connection

Having moved from a house that was maxed out at 2mb on a good day which often never lasted, probably due to the line length etc.....I thought moving to another house all the troubles would be gone....

So seems we are very close to the exchange, line syncs at top end of the scale and namesco speed tests comes back with 88 ping and speeds showing 5mb download.

Sounds ok and should be enjoyable but using the internet is becoming a chore and once again find myself looking for the wind up handle!

Connection is Orange which might have something to do with it, but did have orange once before at another property and it was fine despite many bad reports/experiences.

Machine used in question is samsung NC10 netbook.

Even loading the likes of google can take a while, normally a page that you epxect to load quickly.

Any ideas of what to check out ?

Your router stats for starters.

I'm with Orange and have no line problems at all (other than the infamous support )

DNS perhaps, or if you're using XP, maybe MTU etc problems?

Are you measuring the speed from a wireless connection to the router or an ethernet cable?

If wireless, try a direct ethernet connection and check the speed again.

I have tried it cabled in as well as wireless, something the wireless upstairs on Vista PC seems the best and the router is downstairs, it also seems to ping much much higher, but I thought that was a bad thing?

Sometimes is paints a half decent picture but it's seems to stutter, similar to Plusnet at last property, but went Newnet there and that was never as big an issue.

If you use the namesco speedchecker the needle is not smooth it's like its fighting to climb upto where it should be.

Speedchecker.org as we speak gives 8.8mb in 15 secs and 4.8mpbs but an example is the other house does not even get close to that but the webpages load much faster and smoother and thats on a 1750 - 2000 ip profile.

As I type tested at :

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 3385 kbps

Pretty poor but its not that fact its 3385, as other connection slower but far better

Could be a rotten Orange.

Router Stats look good; you won't get more than 8 Meg out of any of Orange's current packages.

EDIT: Sync Speed and IP Profile are fine but perhaps your NM is low at 11.7 dB? At your attenuation your line would be capable of about 20 Meg, but because you're on an upto 8 Meg package the NM should increase quite a lot to bring the speed down within the 8 Meg range (my NM is 22 dB on an attenuation of 27dB). Could this point to a problem with your house wiring?

Any router will suffice. I've successfully used the Orange/Siemens router and the Netgear DT834G instead of Livebox.

I'm not expert but from our last place I thought the lower the margin it was able to hang onto the better?

Our sync speed would always be slower when the margin was raised, it was often down at 6-7db which was good for getting the 2mb profile, any higher and it would start to drop.

Wouldn't have thought be wiring issues, house just over a year old and all new done by BT openreach I believe, the livebox is in the main socket.

Did you find the other router better than the livebox?
