IP Proflle Change?

[link to this post]

Hi,

I've just moved from a BT business managed 2MB broadband package to BT Option 3 as my work are no longer funding broadband and curious about the line speed. My router stats are from a Belkin 8633:

Type Interleave Path

Downstream

Data rate 7232Kb
Noise Margin 7
Output Power 123dBm
Attenuation 29dB

Upstream

Data rate 448Kb
Noise Margin 24
Output power 199dBm
Attenuation 14dB

The BT speedchecker seems to be indicating that I have an IP profile of 2Mb. Reading around it seems that for a large difference (which going from 2Mb to 7.something should be) ought to result in the IP profile starting to move upwards fairly quickly, but after 24hrs it's still stuck resolutely it seems on 2Mb. Is that normal or is it likely to remain stuck there unless someone does something? I have rebooted the modem several times.

My line was installed initially by a BT engineer and I have the ADSL socket on the master faceplate and don't use ADSL filters on the rest of the house wiring. I'd been with the BT managed service for a couple of years. I couldn't move to an LLU service such as Talk Talk as I need a C&W service that allows me to make calls during the day that get billed centrally, hence I ended up with BT. I have to say it's been something of an eye opener as to just how complicated broadband seems to have become in order to make what you hope is an informed decision.

Thanks for any help, Ian.

I'm unsure how long it will be before your IP profile changes to the correct value for your sync but I can tell you that with 29dB attenuation you should be getting full sync and you aren't which indicates a possible problem with your internal wiring.

If you can't fix it with a hammer you've got an electrical problem.

Stop rebooting the router. Doing this frequently can cause a medium-term reduction in your maximum connection speed. Generally it isn't necessary to do that anyway for profile changes, they happen in the background.

Moving from a fixed 2Mbps package to ADSL Max does occasionally result in a "stuck profile" of 2Mbps. You will also be on a 10-day training period, which doesn't in itself affect the profile but makes all ISPs and BT Wholesale very reluctant to alter anything during it.

I suggest rather than an "instant" reboot you switch off for over half an hour. Sometimes that works. Otherwise you need to wait 5 days from the changeover then try to explain a stuck profile to the support line. (Five days is the maximum time a profile up-change should take). You may need to battle through to higher level support, or perhaps one of the BT reps who visit these forums will see this thread and be able to help.

Thanks both. Looks like I might just have to wait and be patient then.

Tried turning off for an hour, no obvious change.

With regard to wiring I'm not sure there's anything I can try as the dedicated ADSL socket is part of the master which I believe means I already have the i-plate built in and that the house phone wiring is already separate to the ADSL modem. If I remove the faceplate, the ADSL part ilooks to be hardwired.

Thanks again, Ian.

Yes it's certainly hard to see what could be wrong with a filtered faceplate.

It may just be the way the router is reporting the attenuation (there is no fixed standard and different routers can report different numbers on the same line) or it may just be that that particular chipset isn't ideally suited to your line/dslam.

Either way the absolute loss is not huge and as you are on an IPstream product the chances are it would never deliver the maximum at times you want to use it anyway.

Whether or not the ring wire is filtered by the faceplate depends on which one it is.

ADSL Nation XTE-2005 - Yes.
BT logo - I believe No.
Openreach logo - Yes.

If in doubt on the BT, just gently remove the connection on Terminal 3 and make sure it won't touch anything important after re-assembly. Be very careful not to disturb the ones on T2 and T5 as they do all the work.

Note that the terminals may be numbered 2-5, not 1-n. So check the number, not count from the end.

Do you use a plug-in phone extension cable though? If you do, then removing the ring wire isn't sufficient on the BT logo one as there is usually one in the extension lead and that stays connected. So either an iPlate is still needed or some cleverness with insulating tape is required.

In terms of ring wire, the BT one is fine.

The reason for I-Plate was for those who are nervous of touching any wires.

Thanks all for the help.. IP profile is now up to 6000k, although the service does seem rather more variable than I'm used to in terms of what you actually get.

Still not very sure on the physical socket stuff, faceplate says ADSL v1.0 and the install by BT was a bit odd due to multiple lines and a master socket in a stupid place by the front door, so I'm a bit reluctant to pull it apart for now.

Once again thanks for your help, Ian.
