Sync speed halved after bt fault was fixed

[link to this post]

Hi, a few weeks ago the overhead cable that serves my house broke for the 3rd time in 18 months. BT came out and told me they changed the cable so went to go onto the internet and i had nothing. I started getting phone calls asking for someone else, turns out they connected my line to someone elses number so eventually got it fixed.

The problem is my sync speed has went from a rock solid 7.5mb to just under 3mb. I phoned BT and they told me they fixed the voice so its nothing to do with them so phoned O2 who have tried to get a bt engineer out but they were told the line was lenghtened when they fixed it which is why the speed is slower. If it dropped 1mb or so i probably wouldnt bother but its more than halved!

If my line was lenghthened should my attenuation not go up? On the rare occassion it syncs on adsl2+ Its still 43.5 which is the same as before. However now it generally only syncs on the old adsl 1 technology which gives me an attenuation of 39.5 and sync of 2900! The snr sits around 6.5.

I've spent countless hours on the phone to BT and O2 and got nowhere. Is there any engineers out there who have an idea whats happened here? BT have told me to phone the LPR team from bt wholesale but they want to charge. What exactly does that team do? If i was assured to get it sorted I would probably be willing to pay!

thanks

Yes, if the line had been lengthened significantly, which would really be only if they had connected you to a different route from the green cabinet to the exchange, then the attenuation would have risen.

The difference between ADSL and ADSL2+ attenuation is normal, though usually only about 3dB not 4dB. So maybe that indicates something odd as well.

I think there could be a dodgy joint in the repair, causing a much higher level of background noise, which very occasionally goes clean. What sync do you get when it manages to get ADSL2+?

strange problem and I think robertos is right, it looks like whatever they did to your line has introduced significant noise or your new copper pair has serious crosstalk issues. This would make it an openreach issue, however they will argue that your line is performing within spec.

thanks for the replys,

It normally syncs during the day at adsl2+ then downgrades at night to adsl1. It syncs around 4.5mb but drops to 3mb at night. While O2 were doing there 24hour test on the line I noticed the SNR was 18-20db for an hour or so then dropped back to 6ish. I know the line is not right but it's proving it thats the problem.

I cant believe that openreach will not acknowledge that my line has been 7.5 - 8mb consistently for the last 2 years and investigate this. They are telling O2 that im getting an acceptable service!

Is there any other way of getting them to admit there is a problem?

If this new line has significant noise, would this show up on voice calls?

Hi
have you tried quiet line test Ring 17070 option 2 . carry out the test a few times at the times you have worse problems . If there is noise on the line then They have to fix it .

All this is nonsense about extending the line
Your present attenuation 39.5 (40) should give you 6976Kbps with an estimated line length of 2.9 Km.
If Your connection speed(2900Kbps) is because of extended line then your new line length would be 4.2 Km and you attenuation should be around 58 db .

You don't mention what router you are using .
quote from RobertoS : I think there could be a dodgy joint in the repair, causing a much higher level of background noise,

To see if this is the possible cause try running Routerstats . you can find it at

as far as openreach are concerned if your voice works its acceptable, that is how low their standards are.

So progression I guess would depend on O2 pushing the issue on your behalf and if you get a sympathetic engineer visiting.

some types of noise may affect voice whilst others wont. If it doesnt affect voice you are going to have a hard time getting it fixed.

If the router is an O2 Box or a Netgear RouterStats Lite, lower down on the RouterStats web page, is a darn sight easier to get going.

Virtually plug'n'go.

O2 don't seem to be pushing the issue with BT at all, everytime i phone they tell me they are going to do a test but to be honest im sure they are just saying that now so ill give them a rest for a few days!

Looks like i'm going to have to get lucky or just deal will the fact i wont get my speed back up!!

Thanks for your replies guys
