Nor do I.

I think they did it because they saw the rise of the mobile and the loss of value in their precious local loop.

Nonetheless - no other telecoms company in the country and perhaps in the world provides ADSL on such a high proportion of lines. Why they did it is secondary. The fact is that no-one else was or is going to do it.

the reason is the uk has superior population layout.

Do BT provide adsl in areas where they would have to modify the local loop to supply the service?

As I understand it this is the case in other countries where there is no dsl availability where they have thinly spread out populations in large land mass.
