Virgin media phoneline, what other options?

[link to this post]

My mother in law is only just entering the 21st century and is getting broadband, she currently has a Virgin Media phoneline, can she get broadband from any suppliers other than virgin?

Is it Virgin Media cable phone? Or a normal BT-type landline?

If it is cable then the only broadband is Virgin Media, unless she gets a BT-type line as well.

If it is a BT-type line already then it is technically possible to get most ISPs in the country. But Virgin Terms & Conditions may say no, on commercial grounds. You need to check them.

If it is a BT-type line, what exchange is it? We can recommend the best for her.

I think it's a cable type phoneline because they have thier tv with Virgin too so that means she's stuck with virgin then?

'Fraid so. But Virgin Media cable broadband isn't bad. Can be quite good and I would think perfectly adequate for her.

It's Virgin Media ADSL over a BT-type line that is poor compared to many others.

VM's cable broadband doesn't use the phoneline. It uses the TV coax wire. Typically there would be a splitter installed at the point the coax enters the house.
