Broadband line quality

[link to this post]

Have been thinking my ADSL broadband speeds has been dropping recently, (though I can't actually be sure about that). On the speedtests I'm getting about 200kbs. Incidentally my upload speeds are very good. In the region of 300kbs

So after a few calls to Virgin they told me that my phoneline could only up to512kbs. That all checked out on SamKnows.com However when I put my full address in it says that I should be able to get around 6MB.

So why the big difference? Am I just unlucky? I'm only about 800m from the exchange.

Could it be my line quality. From some searches I've done it appears that many people around me are getting high levels of download.

Thanks Ali

If you can post your line 'attenuation' this will allow people to say what you could expect.
You'll find this in your router status type pages...

Thanks, it looks like you have a serious internal wiring problem
Are all sockets filtered? Sky box? Fax? etc...
Any old extensions that are not in use? If so remove them.
Have you removed the bell/ring wire from the master socket?
Is your router on a extension or plugged in to the master socket?

Just need a bit of a tidy up.

Also what exchange are you on? (Samknows.com can tell you)
You might have better options for ISP than Virgin.

Thanks All

Here are the new stats. Router is now plugged into master socket with bell wire removed from said socket. No change in broadband speed.

The sync has improved to just under 3mbit. It takes time for the BT systems to update that you have have a higher sync speed, see here - http://www.robertos.me.uk/html/bt_ip_profiles.html

Old Stats
Statistics Downstream Upstream
Line Rate 320 448
Noise Margin 27.6 dB 13.0 dB
Line Attenuation 18.5 dB 12.0 dB
Output Power 11.9 dBm 13.8 dBm

New Stats
Statistics Downstream Upstream
Line Rate 2944 448
Noise Margin 18.3 dB 16.0 dB
Line Attenuation 18.0 dB 12.0 dB
Output Power 11.9 dBm 19.7 dBm

Though your noise margin is still rather high...

With that attenuation (nice and low) you should be getting the maximum sync (8128) on ADSL.

You need to try testing using the TEST socket which is revealed by taking off the lower part of the Master Socket faceplate.

By using the TEST socket all your homes internal wiring should be disconnected.
