What's the point of FTTC when......

What's the point of FTTC when there's nearly a mile of aluminium cable between the cabinet in the exchange, which BT refuse to replace ?

God 'elp us ! frown

Well God help you, my cabinet is 50m of cable length away smile

FTTC you do realise is there to replace that cable run between the cabinet and the exchange, right? If you mean that your 'cabinet' is in the exchange you aren't getting FTTC anyway I'm sorry to say, however I remember you mentioning living out in the sticks so an alternative technology will probably come to you well before FTTC.

Did you mean to say the cable between exchange and cabinet? As this is what FTTC bypasses.

What it does not change is the cabinet to your home segment. The effect of this will be lessened under VDSL, and their 15Meg connection guarantee means if below that they'd have some cable to replace.

NOTE: It is 15Meg connection, not 15Meg throughput as some places have suggested. Throughput will of course depend on all the other links in the chain.

Yes, exchange to cab.

Well, if BT are refusing to replace 1000m of aluminium, I can't see fibre coming any time soon frown

The opposite applies surely?

If they will replace the aluminium with fibre, then there's no incentive for them to swap out the aluminium for copper in the meantime...

Why not?

If you think you might be rolling out fibre to fix broadband speed issues, then why bother replacing the metallic part if it is otherwise good for voice calls?

Once FTTC is in place all that will go down the D side is, people who've not migrated to a FTTC based product and phone calls.
