BT internet

[link to this post]

So, my internet has been a massive mess since I cant remember, and I just want to get it off my chest and maybe get an answer!

I'm 17 and enjoy playing online games (Call of Duty 4/2, Counter Strike etc), and also like streaming videos, Youtube etc. It all started back in 2007 when I was on TalkTalk and my internet was great, low latency, great download speed (1mb) until one day they were doing maintenance on the phone lines in my area, said they were improving the lines. 2 days later, the internet didn't even work, and we thought it was strange when the lines should be great! So after a day of trying to get into contact with someone who understood our problems, and could understand us, we still had no luck. At this point we had enough and decided that the lines were owned by BT and at this point they had a great HomeHub deal on in which we went ahead with and got. They installed our HomeHub perfectly, and it worked, my download speed was now 250kb/s (unlimited downloads) which worked perfectly for the things I needed it for. My telephone wire not great was fuzzy, but the internet was good.

After a good 2 months, my mum decided it was time to try and fix the line, so we rung up to find out that the call centre was yet again abroad and couldn't understand our problems, although this time we got an engineer to come and look at the lines and explained what had happened in the past. He said that he knew our phone box/exchange box (the green box's you have on your street laugh!) and that it wasn't a great one. He noticed that our phone lines ran through trees and replaced it saying the line had been wore. This didn't fix the problem at all, it stayed the same, same download, same fuzzy telephone conversations (sometimes so fuzzy you couldn't hear the other person). So pretty ****** my mum had payed all this money for this engineer to come out and fix it, I rang up not amused as you could imagine, and we got yet another BT engineer sent out. This chap was nice, and said he couldn't find a problem anywhere, and didn't know what was up with the line. So he came back the next day, even when he had another job to be going to, and said instead of my internet going to the box before the exchange, it went straight there. So it was as if we had a brand new line! Now this line was the same, and also the same line, but less fuzzy now! The internet held up great until around 6-7 weeks until it packed in again. It would take quite some time to open web pages, buffer youtube videos and do other things. My upload speed was still the same 30kb/s, but my download speed was way way down, were talking 10kb/s (what sort of internet is this?) I rang up yet again not amused, to talk to some Indian guy, who doesn't understand my problem. I managed to get my problem through to him and he said to test it on speedtester.bt.com and I got something ridiculously bad like 1000b/s. He said there was a problem with the line and he was going to fix it, and after 3-4 days it was working perfectly again! Now, yet again its packed in. It takes a while to do anything, and I'm not happy as I use my internet/computer daily and now its not working good, which leaves me nothing to do. Heres the results from recent tests;

http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/6521/badinternet.png

http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/4504/651348667.png

what it used to be;

http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/9785/636888832.png

Ive spoken to a few people online whom I know from playing games, and one of them said BT will turn down my internet speed to better others on the same line, this method is called LLU, have a read;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local-loop_unbundling

Now maybe its this that's making my internet useless, or maybe its the line? But what ****** me the most is that my side of the road can't get fibre optic, yet the houses across the road can? So here I am with 250kb/s WHEN my internet DOES work, and my friend opposite laughing at me with his 3mb download speed. Now im deeply thinking about changing broadband company's, but if there's any advice or anything you could give me, it would be GREAT! Im so ****** at it, its a joke as you can see, plus ive just taken my time out to write this essay! Well thanks for reading, much appreciated!

Regards, Lewis.

Can you post the line stats (attenuation . noise margin , line rate etc) from the home hub
see http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php#10 for details how to obatain the info.
This shows the raw connection from your hub to the exchange equipment.
Also, can you run and post the test result from the BT Speedtester http://speedtester.bt.com
Your problems are unlikely to be related to LLU

Your hub is connecting to the exchange equipment at 2240kbps. BT use a series of banded profiles based on your connection speed. Yours is set at 1750kbps. That is the max rate at which your connection can receive data using BT broadband on your line at present.
You actually managed to receive data at 135kbps which is obviously very poor.
I would guess on congestion at the exchange . Do you know which exchange you are connected to? http://www.samknows.com/broadband/search.php will help

As rogan8 says, you need to try to find those line stats.

The BT speed test tells us the existing connection speed and profile, but the stats will tell us what it should achieve - hopefully what you used to get.

The link to the samknows exchange details he asks for would be great as well.

Well it isn't exchange congestion so far as I can see. And comparing the 29 Nov speed test with the BT Test in your opening post, when was the last time you disconnected and reconnected?

The reason I ask is that the BT test connection speed is ludicrously low, but if you haven't reconnected since you got that the it won't increase.

Even if that sorts out the connection speed, the 135kbps actual is still rubbish.

When you say "disconnected then reconnected" im assuming you mean from the internet, then reconnected, or if you meant restart router I rarely ever do both.

To save confusion easiest just to restart the router smile. Then run a BT speed test afterwards. (A speedtest.net test won't tell us what we need).

135kbps is susspicious. I wonder if there has been a low sync event or intermittent connection which has resulted in the profile being dropped to 135kbps (the lowest it can be). The profile has since risen to 1750kbps but something has not updated and its still stuck at 135kbps.
Afraid you need to go back through the broadband helpdesk to look into this.
Or post in the BT Broadband section (after registering on this site) and one of the BT Care reps amy help you out directly.
Edit: BT Care has already responded.

Hi Anonymous,

There does seem to be an issue with your throughput as the guys on here have kindly advised. Feel free to drop me an email to [email protected] and I'll get this sorted out for you. Please include your account details in order for me to carry out some diagnostics on the circuit to identify the cause of this issue.

All the best,

Robbie

On the LLU your friends are wrong.

BT Total who you use have a system of traffic management that is used to stop one person hogging all the capacity at peak times, BUT THAT IS NOT LLU.

LLU is what firms like Sky, TalkTalk use to provide their services, and means they buy less from BT, i.e. just a basic copper line, rather than a full end to end BT service.

Hey its Lewis returning back again, to post my internet has gone back to normal for some reason. This is a what happens when my download speed goes down, it comes back after 4 to 7 days later. It went down on Thursday, and has now gone back to normal download speed. Thanks for everything though, and although its gone back to normal, I have to get to the bottom of this!

Sounds like an IP Profile drop.

The question is why are you getting the low speeds that cause it. On the BT speed tests the sync was low as well, so that's what you have to trace.
