Moving House, Same Number, perhaps Switching ISP?

[link to this post]

Hi All

Hopefully someone will have encountered this situation before...

Currently have a BT landline with Orange BB (it's included/free with my wife's mobile phone package). We are shortly moving to a new-build house across town, and wish to keep the same phone number. Although we've been fairly happy with Orange BB, I am looking to switch.

If I decide to switch:
- do I just cancel Orange BB for the day that we move?
- Do I need a MAC code from Orange (as it's the same phone number), or is it like starting afresh?
- Can I order BB from the new provider in advance, despite the phone number not having moved location? Or do I have to wait until BT move the number across?

If I decide to stick with Orange:
- Is the move likely to trigger a new contract?

In this situation, is it any quicker to switch than moving Orange BB across?

Thanks in advance

paul

Some I can answer, some not, and some depend on what Orange BB package you have now (LLU or BT Wholesale based?) and what else is available.

Have you check with BT that you can keep the same number, and have you already ordered the move? It makes a difference to other answers.

What exchange will you be on at the new house? (Is it certain to be the same as now?) So we can see what else you could get.

As you are prepared to give up the free broadband, what is the most you are willing to spend, and what sort of usage do you have? Both type and volume.

If you have already ordered the move from BT I think it is too late to get a "Simultaneous Provide" (or SIM), which needs a "Linked Order Number" (LORN) to be obtained from BT at the time of order. This service can be unreliable. What you do is give the new ISP the LORN when you order the BB and they submit it with their order to Openreach, like a MAC. The trouble is many ISPs don't know about this, and even if they do not all allow for it in their computer systems.

I don't think you would need a MAC as it will be a different line altogether. So depending what you do you may have a Cease charge for the old address and a connection charge at the new frown. Do Orange do free house moves?

Orange's T&C's say:
5.2 In the event that you Move, and you notify us that you want to receive your existing Service(s) at your New Home then:
5.2.1 we may terminate your current Service(s);
5.2.2 you may be required to reregister for those Service(s) and you may be required to commit to a new contract with a new Minimum Period;
5.2.3 provided that we can meet the conditions set out in Clause 1.1 and that no other technical limitations apply we will activate the Service(s) to your New Home; and
5.2.4 we may also charge you for our administration and set-up costs arising from your Move.
You may find the rest of these T&Cs at: http://www.orange.co.uk/terms/5506.htm?linkfrom=term...
