Hello, I hope you can help. I am landlord of a house with four students who all obviously want reliable internet. The house doesn't have a phone line so Virgin has provided broadband, with intermittent reliability. Virvin's rate has doubled in two years to £19pm so I thought I'd ask you guys if there was better value and more reliable choice. Without a phone line, is there another option than Virgin? Many thanks

No, Virgin is your only choice unless you get a BT phone line - unless you have wireless or 3G available. What exchange are you on? http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php
Why do you think it's intermittent, it should be always on?

Hi. Sorry, don't know what exchange the house is on. It's in Newcastle upon Tyne. When I say the reliability is 'intermittent' I mean that sometimes it's ok and sometimes the students are moaning to me about it not working.

i no this is prob stupid of me to think this.......
but have you called vm and had the issues u have with your connection looked at...??
u have 4 tenants and u want something cheaper than a 5'er a week..??
works out at about 1.25 a week or so when u break it down per tennant...
rem cheap = nasty in most cases......
i would contact your isp and have then take a look at any issues your having...
with vm cable you should get what u pay for.......most people do...so its prob something that can be resolved ......

Some parts of Newcastle seem to suffer from bandwidth problems on VM. Mostly in the student areas funnily enough, Sandyford, Heaton and area around Wingrove (General Hospital) used to be really poor.
VM is the only option if there is no BT line to the property.

Hi thanks everyone. The difficulty in speaking with Virgin is that I live over 100 miles away and the students never have any credit to ring them. I'm going back up to the house (in Wingrove area) in a few weeks so perhaps it's a good idea for me to ring Virgin when I'm there and try to sort everything out.
re the cost. Yes, you're right of course. £19 isn't much and I shouldn't moan.
Thanks again

Sorry, don't know what exchange the house is on. Then use its postcode in SamKnows.
1999: Freeserve 48K Dial-Up => 2005: Wanadoo 1 Meg BB => 2007: Orange 2 Meg BB => 2008: Orange 8 Meg BB

Get a BT phone line and sign up for BB with one of the LLU providers, like O2, in the area (they are on all Newcastle exchanges). Then cancel Virgin.

oh yea i forgot to add this for you......
8000 521 341
because there is no landline at the property.i take it you would be calling from a mobile..
if you call the above no between the hours of 8am and 5pm then u will most certainly get uk suport and that will save you from pulling your hair out (and teeth) by calling the usual vm support no and get the call centers abroad.........when you first get through you will hear it saying that its the sales team....dont be put of..there is an option in there for existing customers (option 3 i think)...so u will get there........good luck..
