Why am I losing connection to wifi when side of pc case on?

[link to this post]

Only had BB at this address a week, though it was router first but my laptop gets a 7 meg connection next to desktop.

On my desktop it was going slower than dial up, then I removed the side of case to check the card and my connection shot up to 7 meg too!

Tried putting it back on to lose wifi again, took it off and got wifi.

Any idea what is happening?

What happens if you turn the case through 90 either way, or 180 degrees?

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk
My domains, website and mail hosting - Tsohost. Internet connection - O2 Standard.

When I try and turn it around it doesnt affect connection at all but the second the side of case is off it gets a good speed.

The signal doesnt change at all and ping is the same if the case is on or off.

Power down the PC and remove the wireless card.

Look very closely where the antenna is mounted on the panel and check to see that there is a connection from the centre pin of the antenna connector to the PCB and that there is another connection from PCB to the panel. Make sure the antenna is screw on properly.

Can your laptop connect to the internet without the desktop being switched on?
Does your desktop have a wireless connection? If so, it sounds like it's not physically set up properly. It also sounds as if your laptop is using the desktop wirelessly as an ICS agent.

Yes it can connect without the desktop perfectly and has a far stronger signal, only using a O2 Wireless Box 2 for the connection that gets 2 bar signal for desktop and 5 for laptop, I reckon theres something I am missing just strange that I dont get a good connecton till the second I remove case.

Will try moving it 90 degrees again as just tried that and it worked with case on

Edit yep it works with side of case on when moved 90 degrees.

In that case, as has already been suggested, you have an antenna problem on the desktop PC. Is the antenna fixed or is it connected via an "extension lead"?
Personally, I wouldn't use wireless on a desktop, particularly if it was my main machine.

Its the screw on type so easy to replace if its that, cant go wired(which I prefer anyway) due to the router being in bedroom as for some reason thats why the master socket is(likely as the pole is out the back near bedroom and when installed probably didnt have long enough cable.

You can buy an extension antenna that will then sit on top of the desktop or a nearby shelf, similar to the one in this pic.
I prefer Homeplugs however.

You dont have to use the master socket for the router - isnt there a phone near the PC you can use ?
