Exchange status - Virtual Paths: RED

[link to this post]

One of my users has continual dropout problems with his Broadband connection, and he reports that this has been going on for a few weeks now. I have yet to pay a site visit, but looking on an Exchange Status Checker site it shows Virtual Paths: Red with an expected "ETA fix time of 23 May 2010". "Record last updated: 28 May 2010".

I'm due to go out there on Friday to do the usual equipment checks in his property, but I'd be interested to know if this status report would likely give the dropout symptoms he's experiencing.

it would result in low throughput and possibly packet loss, but it depends what you mean by "dropout"

User reports complete loss of connection and sync, i.,e. no DSL l.e.d. I'm told it will reappear and connect again automatically after a few minutes.

On my visit tomorrow I'll be checking all the usual things, filters, router, RF interference etc., and of course checking right at the test socket on his NTE5.

His location is very poorly served for Broadband, having to receive signals from the exchange several miles away. Apparently other residents have complaints regarding the service, although I've no first hand knowledge of these.

Knowing the Broadband difficulties encountered in this village over the years, I'm inclined to think it's an external problem, not one within his property. But he is sensibly requesting internal checks be done before making a complaint to BT.

Ok, fine. Just thought I'd check it out since the exchange showed an apparent problem...

Throughput is slow at the best of times - he's lucky to see 256Kbps!
