Moving to house opposite, broadband quoted as sub 8Mbps

[link to this post]

I have a strange problem... I currently live very close to my exchange, and get solid downloads of upto 1.6MB/sec (around 12.8 Mbps) - pretty good.

I am moving to the house dead opposite, same telegraph pole, looks like same length telephone cable from said pole, yet BT Wholesale quotes the telephone number can only achieve 6Mbps maximum 50% of achievable bandwidth opposite.

When setting up and turning on the phone at the new property, I asked for a new number not previously assigned to the house. The line was activated on the 6th July.

Is it possible that the records haven't been updated? What are my options? I hate this problem everytime I move, trying to convince suppliers...

Yes, also, BT's checker is often on the cautious side. If you are getting 8Mb from the same pole, it is likely (but not guaranteed) that you'll get similar speeds on the other.

The condition of the cable and your internal wiring at the new house could affect this but if with the same ISP, they should be able to fight with BT for you smile

In that case, take a copy of the line stats before you move and keep them safe.

Do a little compare (or even post them) but take them both from the test socket if possible. Without knowing those in advance, hard to say but BT's 6Mb estimate can go up to 8Mb.

(When I moved to my current house, said 5Mb, but sits at 8Mb - 200 metre line).

I'll still be very disappointed with 8Meg when I get >12Meg 6 meters away....

I'll take the line stats though, good idea.

But you do have plenty of other ADSL2+ LLU providers on your exchange - so why would you be stuck with 8Mb?

*and you have BT 21CN there too. If you are just sticking with O2 for the sake of it, yes you may be stuck on 8Mb but please do your research on "O2 Access" first.

I am looking at alternative ADSL 2+ LLU providers on my exchange... but the BT wholesale checker says 6.5MB on ADSL 2+ - which is what they will see too - hence I wonder if the data they check with is old, as they aren't running a live test I am sure...

BT's 2+ checker appears even more cautious than the MAX (8Mb) results smile

Seen a few lines show as 9Mb that get up in the top teens. I think that with any 2+ provider, the speeds you will see, will be very much the same. They all use the same line and subject to the same conditions of the line.

BT-based will have the profiling - so that may reduce line speed a little if it has "issues"

LLU-based don't generally have profiling and may also let you lower/tweak the SNR so that you can get the best on the line whilst retaining stability.
