Is it a sudden change or a decline over an hour or so? The normal variation over 24 hours is less than 6dB.

RouterStats is a great program for monitoring what is going on. I actually prefer the almost Plug'N'Go RouterStats Lite, lower down that page, but the full version monitors more things.

Set it to save the graphs, and possibly log to file as well.

Perhaps not. But what you are losing is a lot of connection speed.

It would be useful if you posted your line stats. See here for help if you need it, though I expect you don't as you know your noise margins.

here are my stats

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3808 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 39 db 10.5 db
Noise Margin 15 db 24 db

i have been synced at 3808 for about 6 month and my ip profile of 3mb has not changed over that period

You are getting a significantly lower sync than your line attenuation should support. That coupled with the big swing in your noise margin suggests to me that you have done nothing about eliminating noise pickup on your ringwire(s) - http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/socket.htm

Hi there

Iam straight into the test socket , i have a BT master socket with NTE5 faceplate, when i took the face plate off there is no visible ring wires? i also have this little box to the right of the socket about 3cm in width and 5cm in length, think that is meant to help with interference or something that was put on when the socket was renewed about 4 yr ago, many thanks

It could simply be a connector block or it could be an RF filter. Apparenty some RF filters can cause adsl problems but I don't know anything about this - if there are any identifying type numbers maybe somebody else can comment. Just taking the cover off will reveal if there are any components - I'd imagine there'd be a ferrite based component in an RF filter which should be easy to spot.

All I can say is that with a line which reported 35dB attenuation I got a marginal 8Mbps sync and on ADSL2+ the attenuation was reported as 39dB (the rise is normal) and it managed 12-13Mbps. I'd guess you ought to be getting ~ 6Mbps with a 6dB margin - maybe it's only the higher margin holding your speed down or maybe its something else - as you have no extensions at all you wont have any unfiltered ring wires.
