Latency and tbb BQM

Evening all,

Using the TBB quality monitor, on an 8meg BT business connection (was 20CN, looks suspiciously like 21CN recently), and an 8meg BT business connection in Scotland.

The minimum latency on the Hampshire line is around 20ms, and the minimum latency on the line in Scotland is 60ms.

Is that just 20CN congestion in the highlands, or something else going on?

Are you sure they are still 20CN true ADSL Max, or could one or both now be IPSC going through IPSC node(s)?

If either exchange is WBC-enabled then of course that one could be on 21CN with an ADSL Max profile.

The one in Hampshire is on a WBC enabled exchange, and so I guess fairly certain on 21CN (its also syncing at ADSL2+ on the BT router).

The two in Scotland are near Inverness, and there is no 21CN at the exchanges - for example, one is: http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/NSFIN

Just surprised its taking 40ms more to get to Scotland (via BT) than Hampshire, by the BQM or pinging from my hosted server.

The ones in Scotland are the candidates for having been moved to IPSC though. That could be the problem, if latency used to be OK. Or don't you know?

Average ping time:

TBB Main site: 44ms
TBB forums: 43ms
Beeb main news: 46ms
Beeb Main Site: 45ms
Plusnet Homepage: 55ms (My ISP, so go figure)

None of that is using the TBB BQM though.

None of that is using the TBB BQM though.

thanks, that's useful, shows that a sensible 40something ms ping is possible outbound from ADSL in Scotland - so the issue is the ISP.

As well as the TBB BQM, I'm also pinging from a hosted server at 1&1:

Hampshire BT line = 28.8ms
Forres BT line = 75.8ms

RobertoS asks if the line's have been moved to IPSC, which I would have no idea about; that would be handled inside BT's retail division.

It shows how low spec some of these ADSL services are, this latency is giving me headaches with a VPN product.

If you go to the speedtest.net site, what server does it recommend for testing, and what's its latency?

Just wondering if in Forres, if you're being routed via Aberdeen first.

Would be an interesting test... unfortunately I'm physically in Hampshire, and I have no PC to remote control up there.
