Odd

[link to this post]

Hi All,
Anybody please got any idea's as to why this happened to me the other day:-
System Up Time 1655:46:48

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2510 kbps 1191 kbps
Line Attenuation 59.0 db 28.1 db
Noise Margin 0.6 db 3.5 db

As you can see I've been at that speed for a long time and then for some reason my Noise Margin shot up to 12db and so I did a resync and got the stats below:-

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4652 kbps 1200 kbps
Line Attenuation 58.5 db 28.1 db
Noise Margin 2.2 db 3.4 db

I remained on the above for about 28hrs and then my speed dropped again to 2500kbps. I loved the extra speed and just wondering what happened?????????????
cheers
Paul

Possibly DLM decided to try you on a lower noise margin, but the line was not sufficiently stable.

You should be getting about 3 Meg at 6 dB NM, so only 2.5 Meg at 0.6 dB NM looks poor.

Do these router stats show what you Line/ Connection Mode is?

1999: Freeserve 48K Dial-Up => 2005: Wanadoo 1 Meg BB => 2007: Orange 2 Meg BB => 2008: Orange 8 Meg LLU BB => 2010: Orange 16 Meg LLU BB

Are all your phones and Skyboxes connected to the phoneline through an ADSL filter?

Hi,
My Noise Margin is set at 3db, My sky box is not connected to my phone (sssshhhh) and I'm using an NTE5 ADSL Filter Faceplate, so no need for extra filters. I'm using a Netgear DGN2000 router and I use DMT Tool so I can change from ADSL to ADSL2+, the best speed I can get is what I have now on ADSL.
cheers

Sky boxes are well known for generating noise, even mains-borne noise regardless of the phone connection. I assume you have quite an old one. I'm assuming the difference in connection speeds is caused by noise, so you could try it with the sky box disconnected from the mains. However, there could be some phone wiring issues. Your noise margin is very small anyway so I would expect that to give problems as well.

BB,
In fact my Sky Box is a new HD 1 and only about 2 months old, Made no difference with it unplugged from mains. The router is plugged into the only socket in the house after it comes through the wall. I know my NM is low and as i posted before it can hold a low snr for a long time without any problems not a lot I can do about it, It's just that it held over 4.5mb down for over 28hrs
