Is anyone else experiencing very slow speeds over the last few days with Orange. It's not too bad early morning and late night, but during the day (peak times I guess) the laptop (wireless) is virtually unusable. The PC is wired and very slow. The router is an Inventel Livebox. How can I check whether the problem is at my end, or with Orange. I have tried to phone Orange, but the queue is quite long!
Thanks in advance

LLU or ADSL Max?
Sync Speed or download speed?
Could you have been throttled due to excessive usage?
Post your router stats.

Thanks xray. I guess I'm LLU (comes in on BT landline?)
Tried a download BB tester last night, started at 32Kbs reduced to
0 and never finished the test.
Definitely not been throttled, don't do much downloading
Not sure how to get info on router, I'll see what I can find out.
Seems better this morning but will prob deteriorate as the day goes on.
Thanks for your reply

All Orange broadband comes in on a landline.
Which package are you on? Does this speed tester run or does it give an error message? (It takes a while to respond after you enter the requested details).
Please post the full results if it runs and the error message if it doesn't.

Which package are you on? Roberto, Orange is not like O2. All their packages have the same BB with diff phone extns. It's just a matter of "in or out of area". Proper router stats would tell us or, as you suggested, BT Speedtester.

k thanks .
But yes, the BT test is the diagnostic tool in the absence of stats.

A year ago you said that you weren't on LLU: This is apparently because I am outside the orange network area and third party suppliers have increased their prices. Have you been uprated since?

Thanks again for replies. Speeds have been low all day now back up to "normal". BT speedtest gives 1841Kbs which is as much as I can expect, and good enough for me. I can only guess that Orange may have had reduced bandwidth for a few days for some reason. Think I'll change as soon as my contract expires. Getting through to their technical help line has not been easy! (In fact I never did).
X-ray, sorry about confusion over LLU. Still don't know what it means, but thought LL stood for land line as opposed to cable or satellite.
Thanks again for help

LLU = Local Loop Unbundling
Basically it means the ADSL part of your phone line is plugged into equipment not belonging to BT in the exchange. This gives the ISP many more options for speed and data allowance than using BT's facilities.
(You can have LLU for voice as well, this is what TalkTalk does for example).

Hi Jason, your BT exchange must have Orange LLU (Local Loop Unbundling) installed for you get Orange up to 20 Mbps broadband speed.

Hi all, im new here so bear with me.
Im with Orange for my broadband and have recently found out that my neighbours broadband averages around 7mbps. However mine is around 1.7mbps. Granted they are with BT but it all comes down the same line and id expect a small difference but not 5mbps. So I called Orange and they asked me to do a speed check using speedtester.bt. which I did after plugging my filter into the BT port coming into the house. (shows around 1.7mbps via the extension line upstairs so it makes hardly any difference in my speed anyway)
So I ran the speedtester and it came back showing and I quote:
"your configured download throughput speed for this service is 2000kbps"
On the second page that came up with the results I got this
"for your connection the acceptable range of speeds is 400-2000kbps"
"Your DSL connection rate: 8096kbps (downstream), 448kbps (upstream)"
"IP Profile for your line is 2000kbps"
So does that mean my line only supports 2mb, does my router only support 2mb (Orange Livebox) or is my line restricted somehow to only receive 2mb?
Whats the "Your DSL connection rate: 8096kbps" mean? Id say it meant the line will support up to 8mb? So why arent I able to get that?
One last note, according to BT, the line supports between 5.5 and 12.5mbps.
Just checked on speedtest.net and its got 2.48mbps. Im baffled
Thanks in advance

The answer is that the IP profile for your line is at 2000Kbps, this is what is capping your throughput speeds. The 8096Kbps shows the actual sync rate of your router.
Since you state that this test was run with your kit connected in the test point of the BT socket, I'd politely suggest you haven't got your set up right when using as you were before. There will be a filter missing off something, a Sky box for instance, or it's just that your extension wiring is dragging the sync rate down.
Sync rate will adjust every time the router is powered off (roughly speaking) but the IP profile will require up to 72 hours of stability at an increased sync rate to adjust.
If possible, leave your router in the test point for at least 24 hours, then run the www.speedtester.bt.com jobby again. Come back here with the results. I'll wager that your throughput speeds will have increased. Then we can get round the business of sorting out your set up problems.
Good luck.

Thanks for the reply, ill give that a try next week and see what happens. Ive had no system change its been the same since it was installed and the speed has always been the same. Its never questioned before as all line tests I did showed up as up to 2mb so I thought i was at the top end. Its only now ive checked.
No need to be polite, if im doing something wrong, please tell me.

Leave things as they are, and keep an eye on the connection speed that should be listed in the router
Run one speedtester.bt.com a day.
BTW with a 2000 IP Profile, a 2.48 Mbps result from speedtest.net is impossible, i.e. its fudging or confusion due to security software is affecting that result.

Have a read of my page about IP Profiles. That explains what is going on, and why the others have asked you to leave it connected to the incoming port for a few days, as requested by Orange.
When you say "the incoming port", do you mean the master socket, or do you mean you removed the faceplate and used the test socket, shown on the wall at the back in this pic?
From the BT speed test you posted you have a good line that is connecting at about 8Mbps. We just need to get that to reflect in the throughput .

LLU or ADSL Max?
Sync Speed or download speed?

Post your router stats.
i am having the same probs with orange, every night just past 17.00 i start to lose bandwith, and have recorded as low as 238 kbps, endless phone calls and all the line checks prove nothing, but since sending email to them saying going elsewhere they have replied saying all heavy users are controlled during peek hours, and this has only just started 2 months ago as before this i was on the same speeds 24/7 so i think orange have now got a capping on heavy users. CAN ANYONE TELL ME A DECENT IP IN THE UK ? as unlimited does not mean what it says now !

I asked these Qs over a year ago when Orange was LLU.
And you never bothered to answer them anyway.
And why not start you own thread, probably under "Which ISP?", as this has nowt to do with OP?

i am 80 mtrs away from the main penzance exchange, during the day it is usualy very gd, up to 20m d/l and 1.5 u/l and have had this for 18 months, but orange have now done away with their own servers because of to many probs, so we are back on the BT lines, also at the mo they are laying F/Optic cables down here, don't no if this makes a diff.?
|
|
|
The phone lines were always BT, the ADSL hardware for most is now back to BT Wholesale, for some its better, many the same and some worse in terms of connection speeds.
NOTE: Just because its slow on Orange over BT Wholesale does not imply that all providers buying from BT Wholesale are the same, since their offer different products to the various providers, and how much capacity a provider buys varies from ISP to ISP.
Fibre optic - no difference to you, unless you switch to a provider using the fibre systems.

The 8096Kbps shows the actual sync rate of your router.
To Orange tech the above means that their service is perfect and any issues are a duff computer, cable, filter, kettle, spark plugs etc etc
Anything but them!
When Level1 tech in India say they have performed a 'line test' have they really got the ability to do this, we had no phone line at all the other day but they said the test was fine.
That's amazing!

I totally agree. Have never had such a bad connection as I've been getting the last 6 months. Orange do not want to know. I totally had enough and am moving to another provider with the hope I will have a better connection speed than 0.5/1.5 mbps which is not very stable as it keeps dropping the connection . The new provider have promised between 2/5mbps so fingers crossed, hope they can deliver.
Orange are a waste of space and don't get me started with their Indian technical support.

i.ve had terrible problems with orange last couple of months
slow speed and internet cutting out
phoned technical service .waste of time
tech dept carried out test on line. speed shot up to 9meg after test
lasted for a week then back down to 2 meg
phoned again after 10 minutes of raised voices asked for customer service to cancel
was told if it was the line then who ever i went to the speed would be low
then i was informed that because i have a livebox with 2nd line i was capped to 4meg
because i was on an old contract
changed to new contract for same price but lost 2nd line and instantly got 13meg
i think this is a dirty trick to get you to change contract
|
|

In reply to a post by Anonymous: i was informed that because i have a livebox with 2nd line i was capped to 4meg because i was on an old contract
Porkies! Orange never had a 4 Meg product. Livebox was supplied on the 8 Meg and then the 20 Meg BB. Anyway you couldn't have been capped to 4 Meg if you were achieving 9 Meg.
Post router stats.
