My brother lives in Northern Ireland and they have had no internet since Thursday night in Ballycastle.. My uncle's connection is down and my aunt's on a different exchange and also my dad's work colleague in Castlerock.
Any one know what might be going on?

I'm not knocking BT or anyone else, stuff happens, but surely outages on this scale call into question the Govt strategy of putting much of its communications online ? That's without the cyberattacks we're been hearing about lately ... or the complaints that form so much of this forum's content.

stuff happens It does indeed, and BT can't be blamed for equipment failure, but what happened to the resiliency that was intended to be a basic feature of the internet?

But I think a system that takes out a fair fraction of the country as the result of a single point failure is going rather too far in the opposite direction.

Exactly.
How often does a single failure grind thousands of connections to a halt in this country? Quite often. Just shows how poor the redundancy is in the BT's infrastructure.

Yes where was the resiliency in NI and again Friday night (29th Oct, 2010) in Edinburgh when, we are now told, that 10,000,000 subscribers were thrown off for 7 hours.
Being one of the 10M I resorted to the bound pages of a "book" for the remainder of the evening. A book! In this day and age?
