Slow Speeds after BT Total Broadband Option 3 install

[link to this post]

Hi,

Sorry if this is in the wrong place. I got BT installed yesterday, but I'm only getting the following connections speeds -

Downstream 128 Kbps
Upstream 64 Kbps

It's a new build house and doesn't have a master socket in the house, the engineer never entered the house and just did something in the box beside the front door.

Is there something I can do to speed this up, or might it sort itself out? When I did the expected speed test before I ordered it showed I should get 6.5Mbs.

I've pasted the connection information from my BT Home Hub -

Connection information
Line state Connected
Connection time 0 days, 18:58:53
Downstream 128 Kbps
Upstream 64 Kbps

ADSL settings
VPI/VCI 0/38
Type PPPoA
Modulation ITU-T G.992.1
Latency type Fast
Noise margin (Down/Up) 30.3 dB / 31.0 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up) 28.0 dB / 17.0 dB
Output power (Down/Up) 8.9 dBm / 4.0 dBm
Loss of Framing (Local) 0
Loss of Signal (Local) 0
Loss of Power (Local) 0
FEC Errors (Down/Up) 0 / 0
CRC Errors (Down/Up) 0 / 2147480000
HEC Errors (Down/Up) nil / 0
Error Seconds (Local) 0

I did the test at http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ and got the following -

Download speedachieved during the test was - 92 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 400-2000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :128 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 64 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 2000 Kbps

Any suggestions gratefully accepted !

Ally

switch it off for 20 minutes then on again. See if the speeds rise and the noise margins fall. If not report it as a fault, 128k downstream is a fault speed.

You should get the full 8M with
Line attenuation (Down/Up) 28.0 dB / 17.0 dB

MaxDSL - goes as fast as it can and doesn't read the line checker first.

Thanks for the advice Phil.

I switched the hub off for 20 minutes, but all the values were still the same, but about 1/2 hour after that I couldn't get on the internet at all. When it came back It is showing -

Connection information
Line state Connected
Connection time 0 days, 0:55:15
Downstream 8,128 Kbps
Upstream 448 Kbps

ADSL settings
VPI/VCI 0/38
Type PPPoA
Modulation ITU-T G.992.1
Latency type Fast
Noise margin (Down/Up) 10.3 dB / 22.0 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up) 28.0 dB / 17.0 dB
Output power (Down/Up) 19.8 dBm / 12.1 dBm

and the speed test is now giving -

Download speedachieved during the test was - 1816 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 400-2000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :8128 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 2000 Kbps

I'm guessing it's the profile that is holding my connection back? Will this change automatically over the next few days?

Thanks for all the help.

Ally

Yes it will increase if you leave the hub turned on with no restarts for the next 3to 5 days

Hopefully much quicker than that, given the massive percentage change from 128kbps to 8128kbps !
