Prove modem is rubbish

[link to this post]

I want to prove to myself and Virgin that the netgear modem they have given me can't handle P2P traffic. As soon as I startup any P2P downloading my whole internet connection goes south, and it's not as if I'm getting anywhere near the maximum download bandwidth.

I would just switch to another modem but I don't know one with a coaxial input, and it seems the virgin netgear router won't just act as a modem so I could add my own router.

So is there some program I can use to log the data to show when I have problems, or is there a modem I can use instead that won't have these issues?

Thanks very much for any help!

Are you limiting your upload data rate? This can easily saturate your line so that your download rate is poor and latency is also awful.

Yes, I've limited it to 30kbs, but to be honest as soon as downloading/uploading starts everything else stops even when I've only got a couple of kbs on the download and upload.

there is alot about this on virgin media own forums, the current release of software of the virgin media hub is R05 i believe and they are testing R08 now which addresses this issues, to make it work u need to limit overall connections to about 300 and 100 per torrent, this will allow u to use web pages as well or a simpler option would turn off your firewall on the hub and u can use p2p and webpage all at same time without any issues. this is your only option until they release the new software being tested, or leave VM, yeah they should do this and should do that but they don't so your going have to live with it or leave them until the update comes up or with the said temp fixes above. you can try to ring to request just the modem but they don't have to assure to give you one nor do they have to because the hubs will be installed everywhere eventually and modems taken to those that allow it. hope this helps smile

The R08 release of firmware for the HUB will not help people with the 2x XBOX 360's running on there network problems, you will have to live with the hub or take options above like i have to

Yes I've tried setting them all to pretty low values, and it does make it a bit better, but I still get quite a lot of page not found errors when browsing at the same time, and refreshing multiple times will make the page appear eventually.

Interesting, thanks. Is there anywhere I can check to see when this update is released? I've never seen any Virgin firmware updates anywhere. Could I turn off the firewall on this modem then add another router with a firewall between the virgin modem and my network? That sounds like it could be a solution?

Thanks!

no i don't believe there is a place where you can check when and if the update is close or coming out, im having trouble trying to find out when a realise date would be, as far as i know its in testing still and only a select few have it, im sure when its released or close that somewhere on the community virgin media forums there will be info and until then just gotta keep your ear out. to get to forums just go on there website or google it. with regards to your router it might be possible because the firewall protects your incoming connection and even if you turn of the router bit on the hub and just use it as a modem and add your own router (cable router) then that router should protect you, but since i don't know alot about this don't take my word 100%, but in mean time if your firewall is turned off make sure you use a strong firewall on your PC/Laptop.
