It's hard to tell where the problem is from what you have said.

You say your speed has gone to rubbish. I assume you mean the speed things download. Lots of things could cause that.

To get us started, please can you run the BT Performance Test and copy and paste the full results. (Miss out the garbage at the bottom of it about contacting your ISP and so on).

We can also check for some sorts of problems at your exchange. Can you put your phone number into this site and either post the URL of the result or just the Exchange code.

Don't cancel! That can cost you.

hi it's so slow I can't get them I would have to to it in a morning when it's ok my speed is better then but dies as the day goes on . bt rang me today but no change he said my ISP or something is different and don't correspond with the others !! it's gone on now for nearly 2 weeks . I would cancel but I don't know if I would have this with some one else . I think surly it can't be that hard to sort , As now in a morn when most people are in bed it's fast like it should be but when people come home from work and start using it mine goes . This as never happened to me before . if I can get you them details later I will got to go work soon so can't now sorry . Do you think I'd have this with another supplier ? Thanks

That's a good exchange to be on if you do decide to move - several very good ISPs.

But I'm a bit confused.

You say you are with BT. I assume that means the phone line, and I thought you also meant the broadband. But "bt rang me today but no change he said my ISP or something is different and don't correspond with the others !!" implies the broadband is with some other company.

Where the problem is can be different with different ISPs you see.

That BT Performance test always waits a minute or so after you put your phone number in before it starts the actual test. That's normal for it so don't think it has hung smile.

I'm no broadband boffin lol I was well confused my self with bt . my calls and broadband are with bt . all I know is what they tell me on the phone . bt ring me ask if it's better I say no they ring engineer then ring me back and tell me a load of you know what and this happens every night and I'm
still no closer to knowing what they are playing at after speaking to bt every night. so all I can think of doing is to cancel and go with sky or something . and this will be 2 weeks on Sunday . I could of changed by now and fingers crossed my Internet would work ok .

I will do the test later when I get in . I've done it several times but yesterday it would
not load up anything it was that slow . bt will be ringing tonight at 7 lmao again!! .. what could cause it to slow down in the evenings just like that after no problem at all since being
with bt for quite some time now. and why and how could
it take them so long to sort this . as I had an engineer out and he said exchange ok and my line it's one of the faster ones and it's higher up the problem . then they say no problem
higher up it's exchange . tue a line engineer was coming out between 1 and 6 so I took the day off work and guess what NO one turned up . so I'm feeling like they taking the #### now and are doing
nothing to sort . So I'm not very happy with them after all this .

FAQ

Test1 comprises of two tests

1. Best Effort Test: -provides background information.

Download Speed
196 Kbps

0 Kbps 21000 Kbps
Max Achievable Speed

Download speedachieved during the test was - 196 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 4000-21000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :14332 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 828 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 12000 Kbps
The throughput of Best Efforts (BE) classes achieved during the test is - 16.39:18.87:64.73 (SBE:NBE:PBE)
These figures represent the ratio while sententiously passing Sub BE, Normal BE and Priority BE marked traffic.

The results of this test will vary depending on the way your ISP has decided to use these traffic classes.

2. Upstream Test: -provides background information.

Upload Speed
621 Kbps

0 Kbps 828 Kbps
Max Achievable Speed

>Upload speed achieved during the test was - 621 Kbps
Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 828 Kbps

This test was not conclusive and further testing is required. This might be useful for your ISP to investigate the fault.

If you wish to carry out further tests, please click on 'Continue' button. If not, please close the window using 'Exit' button and contact your ISP for further assistance with these results.

Please visit FAQ section if you are unable To understand the test results.

Notes:
The Download Speed is the average rate that was achieved during this test.

Notes:
Your line is configured to the maximum rate that it can support or at your chosen fixed rate, this is known as the line rate and would be viewed through your CPE software or in your router configuration.

Your IP profile is always less than the line rate and is normal on any network.

The Upstream Test rate figure quoted will always be smaller than the assured rate profile. This is because in order for the throughput to reach its destination, it requires an overhead which explains the difference between the two.

Notes:
If your download speed lies in this range then your connection seems to be working fine.

As they are saying, that is quite a short line, so should be fast. The download connection speed and IP profile are good, and you should get speeds near to the IP Profile at good times but quite a bit lower at busy times.

However 196kbps is a joke, as you say frown. (By the way, if you post any more of these test, the garbage after the UPStream IP Profiles isn't needed smile).

It certainly looks like a BT problem, not one at your end, but we need to try and check it isn't anything of yours gone faulty.

You haven't got any new gear at home have you? Are you connected wired or wireless to your Home Hub?

What security have you got set on the Home Hub?

Does your (landline) phone work OK?
