Broadband ping test

[link to this post]

Where can I find others ping results so that I can compare them with mine. I've long suspected there is a fault on my service, and my ping test results make me think that again.

My Broadband Ping

But are there others who can post theirs so I can compare?

whos the isp.

your jitter looks high for an adsl isp but it depends how idle the connection is.

Plusnet, and during the day there is almost always something happening, you can see the uptime/downtime in the graph, things do improve greatly in the downtime. But I've got a link that can do 16mbs and more, most of the time Im using less than 1mb, I would have thought that was lots of space capacity to handle a PING or two.

The best way is to try not to use the connection for 24hrs and see the ping results. Bear in mind that PCs should be disconnected to prevent automatic updates.

At least, that's my personal way of seeing the line without PC activity.

I am also on plusnet and have simular pings. There is no fault on my line, maybe this is just plusnet latency in general?

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/eb28704484d...

The parts where there is solid yellow, or very high minimum latency, is when im downloading/uploaded at max speed.... the rest of the time the line is quite idle.

An idle day:

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/2724db0221e...

You can see the latency increase during the evening. Compare it to a non-idle day:

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/ec18e5978ec...

I leave my PC in sleep mode when not at it, so the 'idle day' is showing no automated activity generated from the PC.

Hmm, its interesting and somewhat reassuring to see the other graphs.

However I need think more about the validity of "down time", since I am uninterested in the performance of my ADSL when its no loaded, indeed I'm only interested in its performance when its loaded...

I don't often download much that would cause solid use of the bandwidth, but I do almost always have VoIP and web browsing with a healthy slice of iPlayer.

Assuming your package will allow for big downloads, I suggest you download the TBB speed monitor, and start downloading the big speedtest files:

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/download/

Try all three (80,81, 8080) of the 1GB and the 500MB at the same time (or as many as your browser will allow). The six files will max out your connection and the download will register visibly on the pingtest tool.

Best to have a fairly idle period for an hour either side though, just so you can easily see any changes. Then you can try an hour of your usual Internet habits followed by an idle hour.

idle - download - idle - usual habits - idle

The graph should be more telling then.

Just to compare a non-Plusnet one, My Broadband Ping.

The red block is because I did one of my infrequent switch-offs of the router last night.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk
My domains, website and mail hosting - Tsohost. Internet connection - O2 Standard.

Another non-Plusnet graph (today):

My Broadband Ping

The significantly increased ping during the afternoon is typical for my line after a Bank Holiday (lots of businesses catching up I suspect), for a "normal" working day it's more like:

My Broadband Ping

For background, that's FTTC via IDNet through the Didcot (South Oxfordshire) exchange. It's always been fairly clean right from my first 2Mbps connection, right up to ADSL2+ and now VDSL.

I've seen graphs like yours from other IDNet users, so I suspect (but can't prove!) that most of it is down to lack of capacity in the part of the path that's within BT- exchange certainly, backhaul maybe.

here is a comparison for you.

This is from Xilo on a tiscali LLU tail.

Ultimately there will be at the very least yellow spikes when the connection is been used, even for web browsing, but when idle I would expect it to be fairly flat.

My Broadband Ping

Average latency looks fine to me, just looks like your using your upload bandwidth sporadically.
