Speed query ... somethings changed (for the good?).

Hi folks

Not 100% sure what's just happened. So thought that I'd seek some expert opinion.

Been with Newnet for a couple of years now (ADSL MAX up to 8Mbps).

Up till about a day ago I always syc'd at 8,096Kbps with a 7000K profile according to BT speed tester. Attn has always been 33/34dB and SNM varies between 6 and 9 dB (evening/daytime). Line usually stays up around 20/30 days until FECs appear to build up high enough and then it re-sets.

Well. Router just stayed up for what must be a record now (46 days I think) and just noticed that it has re-syn'd. But.... stats now say:

So good news is that my sync speed appears to now be the max obtainable on ADSL max. But.... I see that the FEC count is zero! Never seen this before! Does this now mean that the exchange thinks my line is good enough to remove interleaving?

Have not yet been able to run BT speed tester (what's new I suppose in the evening). But all other testers (including this sites) seems to be indicating a 2Mbps download speed! Though obviously maybe not representative in the evening. Though always before (even in the evening) it's been 4Mbps or above. So just wondering what's going on???

Obviously need to try and run BT speed tester tomorrow morning (just wondering what my IP profile is now!), maybe more luck then.

Any thoughts anyone?

I'm amazed if this line can support anwhere near the max speed with interleaving off!!
(if this "is" the case).

PS. Best part of 3km as the crow flies from the exchange and some 3.5 km by road (which I know is where the cable runs).

PPS. Can't help but notice that my error seconds, CRC and HEC errors are climbing quite fast now (did not used to). Why O why can't BT leave things alone!!!

Possibly a long term noise source was turned off and with the re-sync you are seeing the benefits.

A couple of suggestions. You say errors are now starting to climb - that could be down to two possible things. It has now gotten dark and atmospheric noise increases and with that you will be getting some pick up on the lines and thus corruption of the data, or the noise source has returned.

Try running RouterStatsLite to monitor the SNR figures over a 24 hour period with samples every minute.

Which exchange is it? The link to what samknows says would be ideal.

You may have been switched to an ADSL2+ connection with an ADSL Max profile.

Well unless sam has still to catch up it isn't what I suggested, and I don't think it will be IPSC either, (the last I heard they weren't using that I don't think), or even if that could cause what you have observed.

You should be able to get 8128 on that attenuation with interleaving if your modem has the appropriate capability (which it has if it went over 7616 with interleaving).

Normally there's an indication of Fastpath or Interleaved on the user interface, what's the hardware ? (or did I fail to spot it)

Fair enough. But with zero FECs being logged, I'm assuming Interleaving is switched off now. Always been on before.

Can't see any indication on the interleaving state on the router info page/s. Can I get this info. from DMT???

It's a Thomson SpeedTouch 585v6. Usually holds the connection well.

Finally got the BT speed tester to work and as I half expected!!!!!!!!!!!

Download speedachieved during the test was - 1819 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 400-2000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :8128 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 2000 Kbps

So I now appear to have a 2000 kbps IP profile!

Any suggestions anyone as to what might have happened and where I can go from now?

Provided your connection remains on for 3/5 days the IP profile will increase automatically (and subsequently the throughput), let us know how you get on.

Best part of 2 days now and still stuck on 2000k IP profile. O'hum..

Considering that I've not really been using it too much ( I've been waiting to kick off a couple of BIG multi GB downloads). Starting to get a little worried by the number of "error seconds" that I've received so far! I still think them taking Interleaving off this line (considering the distance to the exchange etc. and that I used to clock up some 1,000,000 FEC errors a week!) was not a good move by BT.
