I was wondering if you could have a look at my router stats and let me know what it tells you about my connection. I haven't done any kind of tweaking yet (such as moving the router around/away from electrical interference, trying different sockets or disconnecting the bell wire), so it will be far from optimal.
Unfortunately, there is no test socket, so I can't post the stats from that.

... you are down to the dregs.
Seriously now.
You could well be on an ADSL2+-capable exchange/connection, signed up to an "up to 8Mbps" package with your ISP.
Possibly Plusnet?
You should be connecting somewhere between 4Mbps and 6.5Mbps, not the 2.5Mbps you are at. Once we sort that out, then there is a chance that on ADSL2+ you would get near to 8Mbps connection, and a much faster upload.
The exchange link from this site, plus the ISP and package details would help. What router do you have?
As this could be a bit of a discussion, it would be a good idea to register a nick. Free and you don't get spammed by the site. That helps keep track of things if another Anon jumps in saying "I have a similar problem ...", and it stops you seeing so many ads! Also you can edit your posts for up to 12 hours, in case you have messed something up. You see and can post in more forums too.

Sorry, I thought the "DSL Type" would specify, but I obviously should have mentioned it anyway.
The package is an "up to 24Mbps" with up to 448kbps upload (so I don't think that's going to change), but obviously that's dependent on the exchange. Unfortunately, the exchange has only the most basic ADSLMax available through BT wholesale. So, the maximum speed is 8Mbps, but it's never going to get that because I understand that to get the full speed, you need to be very close to the exchange, right?

you should get 4-6M at 45 dB attenuation, give or take.
Can you arrange the wiring so that you have a single socket on the incomer with no appendages ?

Can't help any more sorry. Answering the questions surely wouldn't have been difficult, even if you prefer to stay anonymous and risk confusion.
You are in good hands with yarwell though.

Agreed, probably around 1.5Meg is lost due a 12dB target margin, but until you fix the instability that caused this margin no point in trying to get the margin reduced

"up to 8M" service, even if misadvertised as up to 24.

Thank you yarwell, but what do you mean by this?
MrSaffron - What could be the cause of the instability, how could I find out?

arrange your wiring so that the incoming line terminates on a single socket without wired extensions. That's the same as a test socket.
In other words remove all the extension wiring so there is only one socket. If you post a diagram somewhere or photos people will advise if you don't know exactly what to do.

Ah, I see, thank you.
I've done that, and here are the numbers.

Power - 12.0 / 18.0
Attenuation - 23.0 / 44.0
SNR Margin - 26.0 / 11.5
FEC - 0 / 114
CRC - 0 / 1
HEC 0 / 7
