Hello there, i'm currently on 3g mobile broadband due to living in a rural area and not been able to get broadband - atm my speed test is awful at 0.5mbps thats right -pukes-. so i'm moving house next week due to better location. and i'm thinking about going with sky broadband
i was told i would get 6mbps which is better then what im on obviously - would i be able to pay xbox live with this 6mbps - I'm also worried as i have a big family who 3 of us are mainly always online would this effect speeds.
when i order how long will it take for them to activate? ive been told 14 days by there online help chat.
when they send the router? do i plug it in
are sky bb good?
will they tell me what date it will be active? and a time?
I'm new to broaband and very scared - i want broadband with no hassle
thanks guys

Hopefully you can get Sky Broadband Unlimited. If you've signed up for Sky Connect, be afraid.
What exchange will you be connected to?
|
|
|
ive checked the post code it will be sky unlimted
Exchange : Frinton-on-sea why

On that exchange there are only Sky and TalkTalk LLU suppliers, so there is a possibility that all the Sky LLU Unlimited connections have been taken up. I don't know how accurate the checker you have used is.
If you can get on the Sky LLU service that should be OK, but if it is fully taken up then they would put you on Sky Connect, the non-LLU service. That is dreadful. So you need to make sure with their sales that they have space.
Is the cost a prime consideration? If not, there are probably other suitable LLU ISPs selling TalkTalk Business Wholesale if you can't get that Sky one, and the exchange is due for 21CN (WBC) at the end of this month which would open up the door to decent non-LLU.

sky is available But may be full, as Roberto said.
If when you order, they offer you Sky Connect instead, for example because Sky LLU is full, I recommend you do not sign up for Sky Connect.
However, you should be Ok and find Sky LLU is available, and I recommend you sign up for Sky Broadband Unlimited.

Talk talk
BT
are the only ones that are there.. Uh uh! No.
The BT is BT Wholesale. That means virtually every ISP in the country is available to you. Don't mistakenly think that BT means BT Total Broadband, and don't confuse BT Wholesale with the LLU list. See my What is LLU? page.
The current BT Wholesale kit only allows "up to 8Mbps" connections, whereas the LLU offers "up to 20Mbps" or more as long as you are fairly close to the exchange. If you use the samknows Exchange Mapping option you can drill down to the new address and get speed estimates for ADSL and ADSL2+. ADSL is up to 8Mbps, ADSL2+ is up to 24Mbps.
The WBC enablement date if adhered to is when the BT kit will be able to provide ADSL2+. That means, as I said before, other decent options open up to you.
See these sample comparisons, but be aware that Sky has two products combined there. Their "unlimited" LLU that has been discussed at length, which is pretty good; and their dreadful non-LLU Sky Connect which is dragging down their rating.
The recommendation is still Sky Unlimited if not full up. Otherwise we need to know how much you are willing to spend as TalkTalk may suit (compared to mobile broadband) but doesn't have a good reputation. However TT has a wholesale arm and some ISPs supply through that, with a better but more expensive service than the TT Retail products.
A lot for you to learn, as you clearly realised before you started the thread . Keep asking the questions! Everyone wants you to get it right, and the simple answer is already known.

Dude i did a Uk Mapping Exchange Thing and this is what i got if you could explain in more what i can get - eg sky unlimited broadband i would be happy
ADSL available at ~5Mbps
BT Total broadband
TalkTalk LLU
Sky LLU
AOL broadband (non-LLU)
Pipex broadband
Plusnet broadband
Tiscali broadband
AOL LLU
And many more...
ADSL2+ available at ~6Mbps
UK Online (incl 20M packages)
Sky Max (LLU)

Those lists under UK Exchange Mapping are not very accurate and certainly not complete. Best to stick to the original Exchange Search page; that's more definitive.
However, both tell you that Sky ADSL2+ LLU is enabled at your exchange. That is the Sky Unlimited product.
But, as we keep telling you, you'll only get it if Sky have any lines available when you order.

How will i know when i order that ive got the line for unlimited - apprently when you order you can select a date - i went to the sky broadband site and typed in my post code etc and it came up with this
Great news - you're in a Sky Broadband network area, so you can choose from Sky Broadband Everyday Lite or Unlimited. You can also benefit from free evening and weekend UK# landline calls with Sky Talk and you'll save £5 per month on Sky Broadband with any Sky Talk calls package.
Currently we estimate that the maximum download speed your line could support is 10 - 20Mb Help
You don't currently have an active landline so any Sky Broadband and Talk products are dependent on you also taking Sky Talk Line Rental. We will need to arrange for an engineer visit to install a new Sky Talk phone line at your property as part of the checkout process.
- if there are lines can i get up to 20mb -

The impression I get is you will only find out when you put the order in, they may come back offering you Sky Connect.
I am with Sky, joined a few weeks ago and I am a very happy bunny.
As to your question on XBox live, the thing that make the biggest difference is the pings you acheive as opposed to the actual down load speeds. Ours did go up fractionally going to Sky but only by a bit and we are average 50ms, which works fine.
|
|
|
If Sky has LLU capacity then yes it will be on their up to 20Meg, with your connection speed dictacted by the location of the property.
maps.thinkbroadband.com gives various layers of detail with regard to estimates and actual speed tests by people across the UK.
In short order product from Sky, and only back out if they mention Sky Connect.
demographics of Frinton on Sea are such that LLU capacity has probably not run out. Have the new crossing barriers gone in yet?

if they offer me sky connect i'll tell them where to go lol.
i'm putting my order in monday/tuesday time got to wait for bt to activate my line -
i'll then order sky unlimited...
it takes 14 days for it to work apprently
if i cant get it and they offer my connect when do you think they will do this?
|
|
|
|
Yeah the new barriers are in ^_^ haha
Im really wanting sky unlimited if it wasnt avalible then they wouldnt advertise it is
|
|

You might get some strange speed estimates when you order with the actual phone number, as the BT database they will look at for those will for a few days reflect what that number could achieve wherever it went to last time it was in use, and it's all about the cabling distance from the exchange to the property.
So don't worry. The result will be whatever it will be - as yarwell's sig says, (something like) ADSL doesn't look at the estimate before it connects.
I don't know at what stage LLU being full would show up, but I'm sure it would be obvious if they were going to supply "Connect". MrSaffron generally knows what he is talking about as well, so I expect you won't have that problem.
We are all warning you about something that is unlikely to happen. We are only preparing you for it if it does, so you don't get bamboozled by a salesman into signing for Connect with the promise (ha!-ha!) of moving to LLU later.
Good luck, and let us know how it goes.
