vs Virgin

[link to this post]

I already have Virgin 50MB but have ordered BT phone and broadband. BT reckon I'll get 2.5MB down, so it's a massive decrease. I plan on keeping the Virgin 50MB and getting rid of the Virgin phone. I want to use the BT broadband for PS3 gaming and my Virgin broadband for everything else.

The following is a graph of my Virgin broadband my question is will BT have better latency/jitter?

Black Ops is just about unplayable on my Virgin broadband.

Obviously some thought gone into that.

Please can you put your address into this checker and post the URL/link to the result?

Just in case there are better options along the same lines.

The reason for going with BT is the free line install and sometime in Dec this year the local exchange will be upgraded for 40MB

So why did you post?

Bear in mind that you can get a BT line installed for £30 and then choose any ISP you like.

So if you want to see if you could do better, tell us the exchange. If you are happy with your choice and just wanted to tell the world, then fine smile.

I agree that Virgin latency us dreadful, click the BQM link in my sig.

The question was is BT's latency/jitter better than what I'm currently experiencing and will it be better for online gaming on the PS3.

I didn't know you could get a BT line installed for £30 where/how is that?

Exchange is Hardwicke, it can get BE which I think is better but like I said Infinity is coming around Dec.

Where can I see people BT thinkbroadband ping results LOL

Specifically:-
When you order a new landline we check your property to see if we can connect you easily or if you need an engineer visit. If a connection charge applies most people find they don't need to pay this it costs £30 if you're just taking a BT line or free with any broadband package.
I expect a new line would be the £30.

However, it may be too long a line for Be to want you, but if they do that is your best bet for latency.

That looks like an error.

When I went through the order process I'm sure I saw £130 for line and -£130 for choosing phone and broadband.

Also when I phoned up about a year ago they wanted £130 then.

That £130 discount is because you have taken their broadband. £100 is normal as per my post just now.

However, apart from Be, BT may be your best for latency. But Be Value is far cheaper and better otherwise.

Thanks for the info.

I'd actually missed the £30 line install. So could just have the phone then get BE.

Hmmm

Yes.

But they may refuse to take you on a long line, which the estimates suggest. They can be persuaded into a migration on a line where you know the actual attenuation, but you aren't in that position.

I'm not sure what is best to do. See what Be have to say perhaps? But in my opinion not a Be landline, just the Broadband.

In reply to a post by Anonymous:

no packet loss in that graph.......it is latency you can see,and as you can see from my BQM below your level of latency is about normal for VM....i play a lot of gaming on Xbl and have no probs....it could be that you are unlucky and you are in an area with very high usage from other VM users......but tbh your connection looks ok from your BQM......

some downstream and upstream power levels from you modem/superhub would help..then wee can see if you need a tech out to alter them........

hope you get things sorted....

edit: you will notice that the latency on my live graph has been quite erratic for the last couple of hours, thats because i have been streaming hd movies
