Which broadband should I get?

[link to this post]

Frankly, all the broadband comparison websites are just confusing. My current provider is Orange (free with phone) but I want to get a new deal, however by it's own and without any additional phones etc, which I think is only available through mobile broadband.

I'm a gamer and mainly looking for a good latency/ping however I would like (actual) speeds of ~10. Is this possible for under £20 a month?

If you post your router stats we can give a likely speed estimate. See http://kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php

We need the info john2007 has asked for, as unfrtounately you need landline broadband even though you don't want the phone service.

The reason being that gaming on mobile broadband is miserable. Pings are all over the place.

What about download amounts, like newsgroups, DVDs, TV catchup etc.? Anyting like that? Or simply gaming, gaming and gaming?

:/ That sucks. I've already managed to somehow accumulate 3 different landlines... I don't want a fourth....

What are newsgroups, DVDs, TV Catchup? I'm assuming you mean do I watch TV streamed on websites or if I download large packages regularly?

Regularly - no, and the things I do watch do not require a lot. (Does not exceed 5gig, I think).

Are you saying you have 3 incoming lines with different phone numbers, or three sockets all on the same phone number?

If three numbers then you need to keep the one your Orange broadband is on and cancel the other two. Cancelling costs money if you are in a 12-month contract, but at least you can't forget to cancel at the end!

There are a few options available to you but I'm too knackered to explain them clearly now. Each has good points and bad points and only you can decide. Which is why I need to explain clearly so you don't decide wrongly.

3 incoming lines with different phone numbers. Is it essential to cancel one/two of them?

Tests: Speed test:
54m/s ping
5.58mbps downlod
0.49mbps upload

Thinkbl:
Speed down: 5.4mbps
Speed up: 0.5mbps

Well if you don't have a need for 3 different phone numbers then begs the question as to why you are keeping them.

Sorry for misleading you, I got confused.

Three different lines, but with the same number.

The normal term to use in that case is extensions.

May I suggest the OP (opening poster) of this thread registers on the site, so there can be no confusion about what is being said by whom? Then confirm whether it is three lines or one line.

How many line rentals are paid?
Dos the broadband still work if the router is connected to a "different line"?

It is not unknown for malicious Anons to enter threads and confuse the issue, and this issue is extremely confused - to the point that it is now impossible to give advice on the phone lines, in case a mischief-maker is present.

Ok, I will register. I know what you mean about anons.

However isn't there a hole in your plan? What if an anon registers under 'cyfer' before me?

Nevetheless, there haven't been any malicious posters so far so when I register, it is actually me.

And before anyone panics, Cyfer does appear to be the same person as the anonymous poster, no imposters or people playing silly games in this thread.

Looking at exchange, perhaps Be Value (12Meg max speed) and unlimited for £17 a month might be an option.
if the phone line is not used for any real phone calls, then taking their line rental might be an option too.

@Roberto: Foiled again if I used a VPN frown . The internet has too many ways of being evil.

Thank you for your advice. I will research your suggestion and reply when I have further knowledge on the matter.

Sorry for replying, I don't know how to make a new post.

Be looks very good value, and no pesky landline that I'd have to pay more for. However it doesn't mention latency/ping at all. How can I get any information on this since I've searched their site?

Also, are there any others which are as good as Be?

Thank you for your time

You always have to pay line rental wherever you go.

Apologies, I have been misleading again. I am already paying line rental... however I won't have to put another landline on the bill if I go with Be Value

Be Value seems to be your best option. A superb 84% of connection speed almost 24/7 - maybe next year the Olympics will have an effect but the last ones didn't really. Maybe a drop to 80% when every other ISP fell to 50% or lower.

Worth noting is that Value is interleaved only. Pings 20-30ms. On Unlimited you can have fast path, pings 9-20ms.

20-30 ms is amazing. I've also looked at Be's terms and regulations for their 'unlimited' download and it seems fine.

Thank you for the help

Well there is always a possibility there is something special (ly poor) about your link to the exchange, or the exchange location, but that is a typical Be latency range.
