Hi, today i went to do a quiet test on my phone by dialing the 17070 option 2 and found that it no longer is working,
what happens is you dial the number 17070 it connects you still hear the announcement with options available but no amount of pressing the corresponding keys has any effect(unable to make any selection),
so it's either that they have taken steps to stop Joe public using this facility or there is some fault with it at the moment .
btw i have an active bt line and am with bt retail for line rental &calls and it worked ok the other day

it works fine on my line

Maybe exchange related then, as phone works perfectly on the bt 150 menu system

This can happen on occasion
Usually OK if you try again later
I've known it happen when I've had an outstanding voice fault on the line as well before

Try dialling 1470 before the 17070 and see if it states "this circuit is" your #.

Already tried that , sorry should said in my fist post, correct number, i would of been alarmed if it wasn't lol

Have you inadvertently changed the dial settings on your phone from tone to loop disconnect dialling ? This would cause what you describe.
|
|
|
|
Nope, nothing has been changed on the phone, set to tone&earth has been since i got it,, thing is the dtmf or whatever the name for the tones you hear when pressing the buttons(dialling) is working ok, i can hear the tones but nothing happens ,in that it basically ignores the request to access the desired options option 1,2,3 or whatever it don't respond,
also the main bt number 150 ,all menus are selectable ? so it can't be the phone surely
|
|
|
OK, just a guess. Why are you so desperate to make a quite line test anyhow ? If hugely urgent, then just lift the handset and dial a single 9, that'll give you an open line for a while.

No panic on using it, just that it at the moment isn't for some reason or anther not working, as a result i thought that maybe they had stopped it's use by customers

Well if Joe Public starts using it for no good reason, then there's a fair chance they will disable it .
Which would be an absolute pain.

The original capabilities of 17070 were greater than they are now.
BT removed several functions several years ago when members of the public were abusing it and locking out BT Technicians.
It was estimated that well over 95% of calls were not made by BT Technicians. One example: It was, at that time, capable of giving an accurate line length measurement - one customer was found to be using that 10 or 20 times a day, why?

Naughty - I use it every time someone here asks a Q on it, just to remind myself

Yes it used to do line length, and yes to it getting abused, but there are now many more functions to this number for those registered to use it, automated line tests, combined GEA tests, LLU pair tests, remote tones, pair quality test functions, etc, etc, etc.

Does it have the capability of telling you who's called when they withhold their number?

This circuit is defined as 123456. You are standing in your entrance hall. You have pink socks on. Stop bothering me.

Does it have the capability of telling you who's called when they withhold their number? Yes, it certainly does.

Where I found it highly useful was on my O2 ADSL2/2+ connection as there is something dodgy between the cabinet and the exchange.
I could get continous connects/disconnects which I once clocked at a few hours (as I was out when it started).
Only once did it fail to clear after at most one disconnect by starting up the quiet line test and letting it run for a few minutes.

I hate what they've done to 17070 over the years, having to go though half a dozen menu's just to get a line test done... not even a ring back one either - fat lot of good a text message result is when you've got no mobile reception or working a HM Prison where you have to leave your mobile in the van.
And don't even get me started on eclipse...

or the PQT
|
|
|
You can always trigger the PQT with a 17070 from the line you've fixed or fitted (assuming it has dial tone and not data only etc.) then quickly remove phone and plug in HAWK/EXFO/JDSU before the exchange sends start tone.
That's if you really, really want do run a PQT on that 9km rural line....

|
"Sorry the lline test system is currently unavailable"...
She says after you've spent ages trawling through options and typing in mobile and dn. Why could it not say this at the beggining. D'oh

I like it when your calling control and you get that condescending message that you've misdialed, telling you try again this time listening to the menu options... after months of getting a message that makes you want to throw your cheap company mobile against a brick wall it turns out thats what happens all the control lines are busy or someones on a tea smoke break... grrrrrrr!!1
