www.pingtest.net

[link to this post]

Hi. I've just had a new broadband connection today. I've been testing my connection on various websites, but I seem to be getting a strange result on pingtest.net. When I select Manchester as the server location (my closest server) I get a often get result of 2% packet loss (probably around 1/3 of tests come back with packet loss on that server). Any other server in the world I get 0% everytime. This makes me think that theres actually a problem with the test server provider rather than my line. Could someone else please try a few tests using the Manchester server, and see if they also get a packet loss result. I also often get a high jitter result on it too. Thanks

I think there is an issue with the Manchester server (Xilo). Yesterday, the affiliated speedtest.net site recorded my download speeds as circa 2.5 mbps. frown My true speeds from other servers and actual file downloads was above 4.50 mbps. On pingtest.net this evening, the Manchester server records my packet loss as 5-3%. Other servers on the same site record it as 0%. My tests include servers in other areas of the UK also provided by Xilo.

I don't believe there is.

Just checked the last 500 tests, nothing indicating a problem there and two 100 count pings to the machine from different networks and no losses either.

--- man-st-pri ping statistics ---
100 packets transmitted, 100 received, 0% packet loss, time 99000ms

--- man-st-pri ping statistics ---
100 packets transmitted, 100 packets received, 0.0% packet loss

It says the server is hosted by xilo, not uno. Dont know if you're the same company. Theres definitely a problem there. First test tends to be ok - it goes downhill from there.

Can't answer for specifics, but out of a rolling 500 there does not appear to be a problem or one that I can see from any tests run.

We're the same people.

So can you see my tests with the packet loss in your logs, or is it saying everyone is 0% ? I only did them a few minutes ago, but its been the same all day.

I can see the tests, some will naturally have packet loss, but it is a very small percentage of tests.

Comparing MK and MH, the amount of results with packet loss and jitter is no different.

0% everytime on your other servers - and the same all day. I've tried different countries and everything. I only have a problem on the Manchester server which is less than 20 miles away from me - maybe thats a factor? I dont know how these things are routed or how they work! laugh

Ping Manchester
Ping Canada

Geographically the closest to me is Manchester yet this is the only one that shows 4% packet loss jitter and higher ping response out of the 3 uk servers also on the speedtest.net site Manchester is again flapping on downstream speed fluctuates al the time, all others provide a steady stream of data, and give consistent results of around 90% of my max throughput, so if it isn't a server issue it's the CDN that speedtest.uses

Pingtest and Speedtest do not use CDN for any of the actual tests, so that has nothing to do with it.

The CDN is used for the site content.

It was never resolved to me - same results pingtest results as always, with packet loss only on the Manchester server.

Speedtest Manchester is always all over the place as well. Ping has been 60+ for the last couple of days. Usually around 25. Upload 0.96 everytime all over UK - Manchester usually lower. Download can be anything from 8-11 - everywhere else 11.

Definitely a problem somewhere and pretty much certain its not at my end. Site owner says its not at his end either, so what can you do?

Well earlier on today it (Manchester ) was fine no lost ect, but now it's showing packet loss again, so must be down to peering LINX problem or a overloaded transit link

Hi Guys. Been following this with some interest as I often use pingtest.net to test various circuits. Just ran a set of tests at 4 sites (Manchester, Newbury, Maidenhead and Barcelona). Manchester was the only one to show high latency, packet loss and jitter. Even Barcelona didn't show any problems. These tests were run one after another.

Here are the results:

Manchester (Xilo):

I only usually check a couple of servers (Maidenhead and Manchester) the first is fine but the Manchester server always shows some packet loss and the ping & jitter are usually higher too. I'm with Zen.

I was with Zen (now with Xilo) so can't comment on what it was like with Zen. As for geographical location, I'm in West Sussex near Gatwick so about 200 miles from Manchester.

It's been a couple of months since the last post on here and there's still a problem with Manchester, Xilo server. I'm getting a good ping from there, but the speedtest returns the results of 3mbs, and has done for serveral days with me. Any other server gives me 15mbs - 19mbs on their servers, including ones that are in excess of 500 miles away from me.
