Huge difference between night and day SNR

Hello,

My current stats are as follows:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5019 kbps 797 kbps
Line Attenuation 43 db 26 db
Noise Margin 9 db 15 db

...and a few seconds later

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5019 kbps 797 kbps
Line Attenuation 43 db 26 db
Noise Margin 7 db 15 db

...yet at around 1-2PM this!

Should the Noise Margin fluctuate that much between day and night? It's stopping me from getting the line upcapped and back up to 6Mbit or so.

Sky DG934 plugged straight into BT NTE2000 faceplate.

Are you connected at the master socket?

Do you have a test socket behind the master socket and if so have you tried connecting the router here?

Is the ring wire connected (see link posted above)?

Do you have a Sky box and is it connected to the phone line? If yes, then try double filtering the Sky box connection

Yes it certainly can ... there is atmospheric noise, noise created by street lights, noise from radio transmitters and domestic ...

Every location will be different and the noise level can vary significantly.

I have seen some locations where the swing is as low as 3dB and others up to 9dB and typically 5 to 7 dB is where most are.

Get RouterStats Lite and set it to plot your SNT every 30 seconds over a 30 hour period and see what that shows.


Also, get a 2wire2700 modem/router which if conditions are right will sync at 3dB and hold sync to around -0.5dB. Then timing your resync can give you a significant improvement..

If you can do a plot and post a link to an image - even with your current, I should be able to suggest when you your resync.

On a 2.4Km line length my total 24hour noise swing is circa 1dB (monitored using Routerstats (Netgear DG834GT) or Routerstats lite (Billion 7800N).

Yep it's in the master socket and no Sky box is connected.

Will download routerstats.

May have to upgrade to Infinity if it gets any worse.

nredwood is referring to the test socket, on the wall at the back in this pic. Also what wires are connected to the back of the faceplate when you remove it.
