That's a request setting. Not sure if the exchange will negotiate it downwards as it thinks fit.

You could always try the Livebox to see what Mode it connects at.

No idea, the Livebox only shows the downstream figures, the Netgear Stats all show 0 a few seconds after reboot then after a few seconds it shows everything except the upstream Line and Noise but after 10secs or maybe another 10secs it shows fills them in then

I begin to suspect something at the exchange.

This is just a bug of this router.

The WI-FI is quite poor, do you have any experience with the DGN2200 ?

Nope, sorry. One option, if you want to keep the DGN1000 for the roles of modem (where it is excellent) and router (where it is very decent for everyday use), is to disable its wireless and configure any router you might have ,including a Livebox I think, to act as the wireless access point instead.

Although my version of the Livebox is not Wireless N it had far better signal strength than the DGN1000

Disable DHCP on the Livebox. Change its LAN address to something on the Netgear's LAN that is outside the range you allow the Netgear to allocate.

Connect the two routers using ethernet cable, as long as you like. Use the Netgear as the connection to the net.

The further apart the two are, the better. You can use both as wireless access points. The best way depends on whether all the things connecting wirelessly are fixed in place, or might move around whilst in use.
