If one warns people a resource is not available, then they will just avoid it. Impact might be bigger if people continue as normal and stumble into the 'darkness' i.e. bigger surprise, particularly if a pop-up informs them as to what is happening.
Alternatively if we see if create a support meltdown as people think things are broken, then it highlights the issue even more.

I was wondering how they were going to do this. It seems there is a script running that redirects you to a page explaining the blackout. Turn off javascript in your browser and everything is still there but you are unable to edit as the edit pane is missing (possibly because javascript is turned off). Will get the message to Joe Public but anybody who is technically minded can still use it as an encyclopedia.

LOL. Two posts making it a joke .
I wondered what they would do, so earlier went to a page I know of, via google. The page flashed up, then after a bit was replaced by the blurb.
Thanks - if I need anything I shall adopt one or other solution from the two of you.

If you've already visited the site then the JavaScript will be cached and it's then hard to beat it.
If you clear your temp files ESC works fine

Cleared temp files and browsing history because of your post. Still can't stop it ...
... Ah! At the top of the "Delete" options there was a ticked one, (in IE9), headed "Preserve Favorites website data", sub-text "Keep cookies and temporary internet files that enable your favorite websites to retain preferences and display faster".
Cleared that and now ESC works. But quite how wikipedia qualifies for being in that category I don't know - I can't see it in my Favorites.

Ah. To difficult/slow on a touchpad after clicking a google link. (i5 2nd gen processor). It's only a little X. Esc can have a finger over it at the time you click the link.

Quite funny really.
Wiki goes offline for 1 day to highlight a very serious concern about new laws which would affect them directly and people are trying all sorts of things to circumvent it.
Well if these new laws go though then I suppose that would be the norm then with people having to work out how to get round systems etc just because Rupert Mudoch or Sony etc decided they didn't like a certain website.
