BT Infinity

[link to this post]

My brother has been with sky for a year now since the exchange got FTTC enabled hes looking into going to BT but a few questions if i please smile

1. His phone line is connected via a pole does this matter or go underground at the end of the road?..

2. How far are the cabinets located as Ive had a drive around and cannot see any new cabinets..

reason im asking is I seen a live date of 31st december then it was 31st of march now its live

The 31st dates are just placeholders.

Does his phone number say he can get it in the BT ADSL checker? If not, does any near neighbour's who is on BT?

Do you know where his cab is? There should be a new one close by for FTTC.

It doesn't matter if it's pole or underground.
The cabs are somewhere between him and the exchange..

What does http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/adslchecker.welcome say when you enter the phone number of the line.

Ignore any response based on postcode

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 40Mbps and upstream line speed of 10Mbps

You know there are lots of suppliers of FTTC as well as BT? Infinity is just their product name, like on ADSLx it is Total Broadband.

He may want to wait until April when Sky launch their FTTC product. It'll be like the unlimited package now, no throttling like on Infinity and no FUP.

Should read some of my posts where I debunk this myth of infinity being throttled.

Cabinets are Openreach a division of the BT Group that is required by law to offer the same access to its products to competitors as it does to BT Retail.

Hence the name changes on loads of vans.

I can understand how you and a lot of others thought that especially when you see adverts saying "BT Infinity only from BT" !

I've got this list of the ones we know most about on these forums. On that page there is a link to a spreadsheet others have produced that is very good.

I went to IDNet a year ago. As a light user the price compared to the Infinity price at the time was close enough if you/I paid the year up front.

BT have since brought their prices down, and Plusnet have come onto the market with their Value Fibre and Extra Fibre products. I've just migrated to Plusnet Value Fibre (9 days ago) and so far quite happy. Upload is only 2Mbps where IDNet was 10Mbps, but I'm saving an awful lot of money! It was a toss-up between Plusnet and Infinity 40GB.

Read the FTTC page above the list of suppliers page I just gave you smile. It feeds into the equipment BT Wholesale supply ordinary ADSL2+ to for all the ISPs except LLU ones, and of the LLU ones TalkTalk are already taking the same feed, with Sky starting to soon.

Probably Infinity or Plusnet are the best bets at the moment. But 10Mbps upload "only from BT" tongue .

There are rumblings. But the price is the lowest on the market, and I doubt if their main target customer cares a damn. As long as email go out OK ....

It irks me a bit having had 10Mbps, but really irrelevant to me. Download is as good as IDNet and browsing sites like the Beeb seems snappier. DNS servers?

Could be, a change of nameservers flushes the cache of all those stale entries anyway.
