Government proposals to extend powers to watch what people do online would create a "nation of suspects", said MP David Davis.

If the proposals were enacted, he said, they would only hit the innocent and would be easily avoided by those who were "sufficiently sophisticated" to know about the measures and take action to stay hidden.

However, a Home Office spokeswoman told the BBC: "We need to take action to maintain the continued availability of communications data as technology changes.

It sounds as if the last paragraph could be used in any manner of cases to justify government snooping. Personally they can read all my communications. Bother me not one jot, but the idea that a government could in theory use comms against someone, perhaps even out of context, is worrying.

It started with the nanny state of the last lot, and it seems it will continue.

I am turning more and more anti government, it seems they use a fishnet to catch a fly, and a sledgehammer to kill an ant.

no surprise its continuing certian core policies have changed from the government handover as its still the same hidden advisors and hidden puppet holders pulling the strings.

Hits the nail on the head with the sophisticated types easily circumventing such "watching".

Luckily for all of us, you don't need to be particularly sophisticated.
