slow speeds - netgear dg834g v4 error reporting ??

[link to this post]

hi there my current router stats

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4768 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 41.0 db 21.0 db
Noise Margin 7.3 db 21.0 db

about 4 hours ago we had thunder and lightening, since then my speed as been bouncing about from 0.5 to just over 1 meg , the noies margin does seems to be moving about between 6db and 9db at the moment.

i use JDs auto speed tester all the time , and today noticed when it did the ping test it keeps dropping packets

here is a ping test from command prompt ( which looks ok )

C:\Users\PC>ping www.bbc.co.uk

Pinging www.bbc.net.uk [212.58.246.95] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 212.58.246.95: bytes=32 time=61ms TTL=52
Reply from 212.58.246.95: bytes=32 time=42ms TTL=52
Reply from 212.58.246.95: bytes=32 time=42ms TTL=52
Reply from 212.58.246.95: bytes=32 time=43ms TTL=52

Ping statistics for 212.58.246.95:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 42ms, Maximum = 61ms, Average = 47ms

when i try to do a bt speed test at the moment i get

The Performance Tester is currently unable to run a speed test for your broadband connection. Please try again shortly, however if this problem persists, raise the issue with your service provider.

is there a way to get more stats out of this router as i know some show errors and such like

Click on this link: http://192.168.0.1/setup.cgi?PATH=/bin:/sbin:/usr/bi... and you won't need to mess about with TELNET.

i did a disconnect through the router , then turned off then on, i see that they sync as gone down and its seems like noise has gone up by 3db.

hoping some one else can tell a little more from these current stats , many thanks

Running at half-speed and full of errors frown

Are you plugged into test socket behind faceplate? Removed ring wire? Extensions sockets and extension leads? All filtered?

Re: slow speeds - netgear dg834g v4 error reporting ??

[re: Anonymous] [link to this post]

That's looking far better.

So long as nothing strange happens, you now need to leave things alone for 8-12 days, as the DLM has scope to lower the noise margin and so increase the connection speed. It takes 10-14 days to do that if it thinks the line will sustain it. You've already done 2 days.

It may disconnect you overnight after that time, and reconnect with 6dB and higher sync. Around 500-750kbps increase. Keep a check on stats and let us know then whether it happens or not.

Once we are past that stage, we need to look at why it doesn't then connect at more like 7Mbps, which is what is indicated by the 40dB attenuation. There is an ongoing problem, but we need to see what the DLM thinks of the stability by seeing what it does to the noise margin.

What you could do now though is download DMT v8.07, (read what I say about it on the page I gave you a link to at the start for the telnet stuff), and get that to show the bit loading graph, as in this screen shot. Upload that somewhere for us to see. That could help us diagnose the problem.

You can monitor the noise margin with that, but whatever you do do not use it to alter any settings at this stage! You could mess things up during the 8-10 days. Or in fact at any time without us telling you what to set to what smile.

Good luck.

[re: RobertoS] [link to this post]

many thanks for your post

my default snr is 9db. i hacked it before down to 6db which in fine in the day but get to about 1 am and the noise margin drops between 1 and 2 db, the the router will disconnect then resync back at 9db with a lower sync. usually below 4000

with out any tinkering my line with hold a 4000 ip profile.

"we need to look at why it doesn't then connect at more like 7Mbps, which is what is indicated by the 40dB attenuation. "

i have told my ISP about this, but there response is your acceptable range is from 2.5mb to 6.5mb , so they will not do anything

maybe i just have a poor line, i have been told that some lines still use aluminium for a certain part of it, and this can cause lower speeds? ?

when i check the speed ion my street from here
http://www.uswitch.com/broadband/speedtest/

people are getting between 1mb and 4mb

i have an engineer booked for tueday, do you think i should cancels this

any other advice would be most welcome

I'm told by someone who should know that aluminium in the circuit would raise the attenuation. It should therefore be irrelevant to the sync you get, given the attenuation.

The uswitch comparison is worthless, as people don't normally try to optimise their speed. The ring wire can account for a loss of over 2Mbps!

I don't remember why you have an engineer coming, so can't advise sorry.

Let us see the bit loading graphs. That's what we need smile. What have you been using to tweak?

If you compare that with mine, look at the weaknesses on yours above 900 kHz. That's where the speed is being lost.

Let's hope others will chip in with ideas as to the cause at those frequencies. Out of my area of competence frown.

Lots of useful info on the screen for you smile. Also, in the info2 and info3 tabs it has the adsctl --stats command in the dropdown lists, so dead easy.

i see what you mean is that some kind of frequency range that is coming down my line.

the reason for then engineer was when i had slow speeds the other day, when we had really bad weather, my isp did a line test i told me there was 897 error on the line.

as my line now appears to be working at the sped at always has, would it be best to cancel the appointment, as i would not want to be charged if no fault is found?

I suggest you ask the ISP what an 897 error is, and is it still there. Or did they mean some error count was at 897, if so, which? My guess would be Error Seconds or Serious Error Seconds if that was it.

Looking at your first set of stats they are both bad for the uptime. You new set has zero SES and moderate ES for the uptime.

I would be very scared of an engineer finding no fault, so charging. Get the ISP to recheck the line.

Much better! Errors are now insignificant but speed is still somewhat low partly due to 9dB NM.
