Fibre due on 30th Dec & I want to change provider?

Hi,
I'm currently with Eclipse on ADSL but my local box is due to be Fibre enabled on the 30th December.
I want to go fibre but also change provider, should I change now to another provider or wait till after fibres enabled at the box.
I just want to speed up the change over and be ready.

Also who would you recommend changing to. I have a BT account for phones, Sky for TV.

Switch to Sky & get Sky fibre. 30th December is just a holding date, it'll probably change.

Both Sky and BT are good for fibre. Sky would be cheaper for now on standard ADSL and doesn't have any throttling.

Corrected as that was misleading. I was trying to say that BT has some throttling / traffic management.

Sky has none.

I was looking at going with Sky, just a bit concerned that you cant use a router of your choice.

Should I change over now to the new provider then when Fibres ready in a month upgrade or should i wait till Fibre is in our box?

Nothing to stop you using your own router.

You still have to use the Sky router though generally.

SETUP =

Modem - Sky router - own router.

Turn off DHCP on your own router & wireless on the Sky one. Jobs a good one...

OR Turn off DHCP on the Sky router, Set your own router to a static IP on the Sky routers range, Turn on DMZ on that IP. Turn off the wifi on sky router.

All of this takes about 2 minutes to do. If that. So in effect you make the sky router a modem.
This being said the sky routers quite good actually.

I'm currently running a Small business server of my connection so as long as I can do port forwarding ok it should be fine.

Do you know if they have the facility for a static IP?

Sky don't provide static ip adresses they are not buisness orientated (they don't cater for buisnesses) but are like BT a mass market isp for residential customers BT buisness do static ip's though or there are a number of smaller ISP's but none provide unlimited data during peak hours , but any time in between (off peak) is unmetered, also Static IP uk support no web blocking, throttling of any protocols

You can use you're own router if it supports MER

which from what i remember 2-3 do with beta firmware and cost £80+ (i think the drayteks around £130 though it is an excellent router. )

How much allowance do you need? Plusnet has 250GB peak and unlimited off-peak, and a fixed IP address for a one-off £5 payment. You can leave your line with BT.

Sky require you to move your line rental to them. They do not automatically enable an exchange for fibre immediately after Openreach and BT Wholesale do, and as has been said - that 30 December date is quite likely to slip by 3 months or more.

Changing ISP beforehand has no real effect on the speed of switching, unless you intend to move your phone rental to the new ISP. You can also lose out on good cashback offers as well. I would just stay as you are until the cabinet is enabled.
