Speed test is good but not good in practice

[link to this post]

My broadband speed is about 22mbps with an upload of 3mbps. But streaming films is pretty much non existent.
All the speed test are very encouraging but it just doesn't seem that fast at all.

Any ideas or thoughts welcome.

Thanks chris.

Which service are you on? Some are experiencing issues with streaming.

Speedtests are a snapshot in time from one location to another, if the streams are coming to you via a different route this is very possibly not showing up in the speedtests

I'm with virgin media. I'm on the 60mbps which I do get a certain times of the day according to speed tests.

That is an ISP that we know has distinct problems on one or more routes out of the ISP, and others are complaining of lots of problems at the moment.

So is there anything I can do? Or should I just send a letter of complaint? Lol

VM have major issues with streaming. On the VM forums there are topics running into 60+ pages.

VM are using a proxy for Youtube feeds and other weird routing for other feeds.

All you can do is lodge a complaint or walk away as to be frank, they have been the worst ISP I have dealt with in 13 years.

What is your priority?

Speed? Reliability? Low latency? Low cost?

And which BT exchange are you on? The URL of the result from this checker is best.

My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk | Domains,website and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Plusnet Extra Fibre (FTTC). Sync ~ 53.5/15.2Mbps @ 600m. - BQM

Ok so my exchange is
Exchange name=Bracknell. OLO=THBK

As for what I'm after what's latency? I thought speed was the answer I figured 60mbps would get me great gaming and video streaming but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Gaming isn't too bad but video streaming and big downloads just seem to take for ever. I've even done a speed test when a download or video streaming is in progress and it comes up with around 40mbps download rate. But it's just not. Lol

Latency is what you may know of in online gaming as ping. A stable ping of 20ms is good. A variable ping of 10ms to 90ms is bad.

My BEthere connection is a solid 18ms. My VM connection is anything from 13ms to 140ms - which is bad for online gaming. So I use my BEthere connection for online gaming and my VM for general web browsing\downloads. Mind you video streaming is pretty useless at the mo with VM.

As you rightly point out - speedtests are not good indicators of quality.

You need to compare pricing on some websites and see what speeds you will likely get. Try... BT, Sky, Plusnet, ADSL24, Bethere. Others here can probably provide more providers to try.

You appear to want the best of all worlds, speed & good latency and who doesn't, it will cost you more than you pay for VM.

Agreed - we have VM in the office and it struggles along with even a BBC news video yet speedtests show 70Mbps....

Are you in a fibre enabled area? Go to http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProduc...

Click can I get BT infinity?

If you can then there's plenty of good fast alternatives. Such as SKY Fibre, Plusnet Fibre service and BT infinity. All upto 80Mbps and all decent latency. Similar pricing too.
