How to use a fibre connection direct to our exchange?

Can you help?

We're a business served by the Penrith exchange.

All the offers we can get from LLU Operators are copper based, expensive, and derisory (max 10Mb up and down).

Yet, as it happens, due to a former tenant (government department), the building has a fibre link to the exchange.

How might we use it to get faster broadband?

This was probably a leased line with things like guaranteed bandwidth and onward links to some government network.

Ordering an ethernet service which can be delivered over a copper bundle or fibre may be the solution. The existing fibre may lower the setup costs, but for example a 100 Mbps for rural Surrey over fibre would cost £38,000 a year, but I could run that at 100 Mbps 24x7 and no one would blink at all.

I'm not sure about taking over existing fibre. We are in the process of having a fibre solution provided to our office park but we think they will be blowing new fibre. One of the other businesses has fibre for ISDN but it seems that it can't be re-used which surprises me a bit. We have a meeting in a week though by which time we should have all the answers and quotes from everyone.

If you already have fibre then you probably just need to sign up with a leased line provider. The ones we've got quotes from are local to Oxfordshire but a Google search seems to throw up a plethora of options. Be prepared to have fun comparing quotes no-one seems to want to use the same equipment or contract lengths. But you're probably looking at at least couple of grand set up and a couple of hundred a month rental. Depends where you are.

We're just outside a large town and for five entities sharing 100Mb/s the per connection costs are looking like £3k install and £250 pcm for 20Mb/s each. If you are quoted something nasty you might want to consider talking to other people on your site.
