Anyone with experience of satellite broadband?

Hi all

If anyone has any experience of how well (or not) satellite broadband works, please could they post their experiences?

I'm looking at the Tooway 18/6 service level.

Used it remotely, while also running a Skype screen share and voice chat to help someone do some web based work a while ago.

A little laggy, but was ok, complex webpages with lots of tick boxes and automatic refreshes were a bit of a pain, and they would see speeds slow down if they did a lot, but day to day it was fine.

If you want just simple web browsing, some video but not to the extent of downloading all of the Harry Potter movies via Sky (35GB I found out) then probably ok.

Would I buy it, only if I had no other option.

In my experience satellite broadband can work extremely well with the premium type services. As for the lower end, consumer products, they can be very variable in many ways. Actual throughput, latency, bad weather performance, contention, cost of hardware, cost of rental , cost of data ...

The ping times are long which makes browsing a little slow, but once you get going on a download the speed is okay.

Of course you don't want to download too much as the pricing is very expensive with the highest packages (£60 or so a month) only offering 50gb download.

I have had an interesting discussion with someone tonight and I might have a solution worth considering. I'll send you a PM.
