BT-wifi-with-FON

We recently changed to BT broadband and were quite pleased to be getting about 1.5Mbps. Two evenings ago, I spotted that our hub was displaying three connections and simultaneously our internet speed dropped very significantly so that it was not worth switching on. I assumed this was no coincidence and have opted out of BT-wifi as our speed was OK but not that brilliant and we are in a rural era - am I right?
What interests me is the way BT's broadband speed reported that we were getting 2Mbps into the house but 0.4 to the PC (there was no one else online at the time I did the test). thinkBroadband reported 0.4Mbps as did another site. What is the explanation for the difference?

If you use a router other than the BT Home Hub you can retain the ability to use the BT WiFi facilities without the pain of others being able to use some of your bandwidth.

All the gain without any pain and BT have always said you can do this!

Download speed 0.45 Mbps
Upload speed 0.35Mbps
Ping latency 66.50 ms


Download speed achieved during the test was - 0.45 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 0.05 Mbps-0.5 Mbps.

Thank you for that, Greenglide. My concern now is that we have switched from a faster service to a slower one. With our previous ISP, we had 1Mbps (not consistently).

Your connection to the exchange is fast enough for a service IP profile of 1750 kbits/s but you have a profile of only 500. This may be because the connection to the exchange has been at or below 576k for a period and it can take a few days for the IP profile to restore after the last low speed event.

Your speedtest result is ok for the profile, it's the profile you need to monitor. If your connection speed stays up the profile should follow it.
