Slow Individual Connections - How to Improve?

I'm currently staying somewhere with very ropey internet. I get 30Kb/sec at best using the speed test/downloading files, etc, often less.

However, when I test downloading something using multiple connections (like a torrent/from usenet) I can get 350Kb/sec consistently.

Reasonable bandwidth therefore is clearly there, but I can't take advantage of it. Even listening to internet radio is extremely frustrating at present.

I don't have access to the modem unfortunately, but is there anything I can do to improve matters?

I'm using OS X and an iPhone/iPad.

If this is all wireless, then it can be very variable. You may need to experiment with wireless channel.

Which ISP?

It is wireless, yes - but wired is just the same. I don't have access to the router and I'm not in the UK so the ISP is what it is unfortunately. I'm staying in a short term rental place.

Could be traffic management systems or things like the TCP setup
