BTW Engineer Visit - Advice

[link to this post]

Hi there,

Newbie here, I didn't know where to post, so I plumped for this one.

I've just changed to Plusnet fibre from Be and my speed has been low since it was installed. I was estimated 60meg but only get 40meg. The engineer is coming tomorrow and I was wondering if there's anything I should ask him/her to check as I've had to change my plans for this weekend to accommodate this and I want to make it an effective visit. (I'm probably too far from the cabinet, but it doesn't hurt to check right?)

Thanks smile

Ring Plusnet and make sure you have been provisioned on the 80/20 product, not 40/10 or 40/2. There was a bug in the ordering system at one stage, and some are still coming through.

What upload speed do you get? If under 2Mbps you are almost certainly on 40/2.

If you are on the wrong product it usually takes about a day for it to get fixed after they put the modification through. With it being the weekend maybe it would be Monday if they trigger it today.

There is a Plusnet forum and a Fibre forum here, and also there are the Plusnet Community forums, where you might find all sorts of useful advice. Posting in this one is fine smile, but if it isn't what I suggest above then the Community ones are probably the best place, but if you want to post here as well then either of the other two is probably better than this one.

Thank you Roberto S and Lethe. I already asked plusnet if I was on the wrong profile and they said no. I'll wait for the engineer, they'll be here at 2. Interested to hear what they'll say.

I don't know about Sunday appointments but the engineer that visited me last month arrived at 10am on Sunday. He was scheduled for Saturday though.

The engineer did indeed arrive today at 2. I posted my initial question rather late last night. Sorry for the confusion.

Seems that the max capacity on my line is 42mb due to my distance from the cabinet, which is 600 metres away. But the engineer told me where it is, and it's at the end of my road and around the corner which Google maps tells me is 300m away. Whatever. I'm unlikely to get any more speed on my line.

I'll have to ask Plusnet to see if I can just get the 40mb package, should there be one. I don't want to pay more for speed I can't get (hope that makes sense?) Won't hold my breath though. Not as helpful as I thought they were.

Maps don't always give the right answer- it's the length of the cable that matters, and it's far from unknown for them to take the scenic route frown

That's pretty much what I thought. Can't be helped. frown I wouldn't have gone for the package I'm on if I'd known that I'd only get 40 though.

The Plusnet 40/10 product has a 40GB allowance in peak-time, though unlimited overnight. And a small amount of P2P/newsgroup throttling at times.
