I have seen 2 almost identical looking NTE5 socket designs, one which bears the simple BT logo and another bearing the Openreach logo. I was wondering what the difference between these are, is one newer/better quality?

Edit: found this TBB article, so I'm right in saying most new builds would get the Openreach one and it has no bell wire?

When I get TalkTalk broadband installed I may ask the engineer if I can have a new socket on the cheap, simply because my one is getting on a bit now and I might as well have a new one if I can get away with it

Should be no problem, just ask the installer to replace the existing one, act coy, say you had heard the new ones have a bell wire choke in them, which you would like. (It's the white cylinder on the back of the face plate)

That sounds as though you are talking about FTTC. So (subject to correction) the interstitial filtered faceplate that will be fitted anyway does the bell wire filtering - that being the difference between the two NTE5As.

According to a running thread on Kitz forum the newer NTE5's also have the surge supressor removed as it was found to cause problems with FTTC lines.

Do you mean while FTTC is being installed, or even when fitted on ADSLx? (I assume you mean the NTE5A).

AFAIK, the is NO RF3 component in the new NTE's, only the bellwire choke.
I shall take the comment about the surge protector with a pinch of salt for now.
In the whole of the Kitz thread, no one mentions the most obvious reason for the design of the 'VDSL' faceplate filter over the original SSFP's, they are easy for Joe Public ( and contractors) to fit.

The surge protector is removed from one of the newer ones not sure if it that's version but I remember discussing it on the BT forum and it was removed due to affecting FTTC lines. I will try to find the source again...
