Advice on my tracert please

[link to this post]

Hi,
Please may I ask advice on my broadband connection?

The following is a copy of my tracert to bbc.co.uk
Entanet do not have a LLU service at my exchange and yet they feature in my tracert.
Does this then suggest that I am on the old BTWholesale product?

Tracing route to bbc.co.uk [212.58.246.104]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 1 ms 1 ms 3 ms home.gateway.home.gateway [192.168.1.254]

It might be an idea to ask someone in the Entanet forum to do the same tracert (by IP address perhaps?) for comparison. (But a straight cross-post might annoy tbb tongue ).

It's also worth pointing out to others that the first hop after your router is ADSL24/Coms, so it could be the Entanet routers are the other side of Coms and may just be rented net access going nowhere near the Entanet WBC nodes. As I expect you know from other threads.

Thank you RobertoS.

Does that tracert confirm though, that I am not on a TalkTalk network at any stage?

You could easily be using the TT DSLAM. Was it you with only Sky and TT LLU in your exchange? If so and you were on LLU, then that would be what you were on before.

You never know re TT network. Maybe that's what gets you to hop 2. Not all routers necessarily show up on a tracert.

So as well as an Enta user tracert, you need a TT user tracert.

No, I'm on Woking.
There are a few other LLU providers on this one.

...and unfortunately, although many cabinets have FTTC, my one doesn't frown

I'll ask some kind souls for tracert's from their providers to compare.

It could suggest that you are on a LLU service with Coms but they use Enta for transit.

In fact,their AS confirms it.

http://bgp.he.net/AS51901

AS25061 Associated Networks Limited
AS8468 ENTANET International Limited
AS174 Cogent Communications

This is quite normal but just means that in addtion to AN and Cogent, they have Enta too.

Enta used to do 100Mb partial (peered routes only, generally) for £100 back in the day but looks like a full feed. We see it via Enta to Coms on two different full feeds our end.

Just to clear up any possible misunderstanding for the users Matt, does that mean, along with the first hop being to ADSL24/Coms (as per my earlier post), that they are not "using Enta" in the sense of the same way as an Enta reseller with their traffic going through Enta WBC nodes, but that they possibly/probably have their own WBMC MSIL somewhere?

They are unlikely to be terminated by Enta.

The first hop is a Coms hop, likely a coms router. Between the customers router and hop one will be the underlying wholesale network which you never see.

The coms router will then have internal peering to their routers and then on to the wider internet, via their transits (Enta, Cogent et all).

So they are not "using Enta" in the context of how this forum would refer it... they are only getting an IP transit feed from them as you would from any transit such as NTT/Level3 and so on.

Thanks smile. That, put better, more technically, and more authoritatively, is what I have been suggesting to a few of them for a while might be the case.

They have no need to fear "Enta", but there do appear to be capacity or balance problems under Coms control that they need to sort PDQ.

To avoid any ambiguity on this, use the Cogent looking glass at http://www.cogentco.com/en/network/looking-glass

Put 109.224.191.50 (or any new Coms IP there) and it won't even hit Enta but will get to the destination (if it responded to traceroutes!

I suspect Coms pref Enta over their other transits for various reasons (i.e QoS or cost) as nearly all BGP-based networks can do. Might help them if they updated the reverse DNS though on each end of the peer to something like enta-peer.coms.com or something which might calm fears a little.

Come off it! This is never ending! Do you read these posts fully?

What router stats? I see none here. If in some other thread, then all the OP (or you if you are so concerned) need answer to my Q is a link to it.

Read OP's Q and my quoting of it again; he asked 'am I on the old BTWholesale product?'.

I don't really understand the later posts in this thread about peering and transits. So maybe my Q has been answered. I don't really know as that stuff could just be after it's handed off by BTw into ISP's network.

All this kerfuffle and argument in response to a simple Q frown ! It's really OTT!

Hi guys I'm really sorry if I have confused matters by not reporting with the correct terminology.

Thank you very much for your concern and expertise.

Basically I have a stable line syncing at just over 8Mb.
My ISP was ADSL24 who have just been bought out by Coms.

My previous connection was fine and I achieved 8Mb speeds (900KB/s or so) pretty much 24/7.

Since being switched through Coms' network I am now seeing good speeds early in the morning but these drop as the day wears on so much that come evening time I only see 1 - 2Mb.
This has happened for 3 days in a row now.
I will also add that as the speed begins to drop off, it is usenet speed that drops off before http.

The service is obviously shaped/prioritised and oversubscribed.

You could go back to the same setup that you had with ADSL24 before Coms moved us over.

If you go with Xilo, on their TTB LLU option, they use Daisy Wholesale, just like ADSL24 used to.

Hi XRaySpeX.

I'm sorry I haven't posted my router stats.
I did actually copy them to a .txt file but before I got round to posting them for you, I read a message from my ISP (Coms) indicating that they had made some changes to their network.

These changes have had a positive effect on my service which is now totally back to normal.

So for now all's well with the World.

I know you were trying to help and I thank you very much for your generosity, expertise and time in doing so.

All the very best.
